I . Roil Call
The regular meeting of the Orange Public Library Board of
Trustees was called to order at 4:35 p.m. by Chairman Tom Saenz
. at the Friendly Stop, 615-A North Lemon Street, Orange,
California.
Present: Trustees Saenz, Courtney, Gorham, McEwan and Way. Also
present: Karen Leo, Library Director and Hazei Wang, E3ranch
Services Manager and Acting Technical Services Manager.
Absent: Kerry Stern, Main Library Manager.
II . Approval of Mlnutes
Trustee William Courtney found grammatical error on Page 3,
Section D, "Main Library Hispanic Teens Program, " the word
"would" was removed.
Trustee Gorham moved that the Minutes be approved as corrected.
Seconded by Trustee Way.
III . Financlal Report
Director Leo advised 7rustees of a portion of funds being
transferred from Account No. 200-2012-441101 , �25,778.32 to
Account No. 200-2001-449100, "Minor Office Equipment" for
FY90/91 .

IV. Director's Report
Director Leo commented on the length of the Direc�or's Report
and asked if Trustees wvuld prefer a shorter repQrt. They
replied they felt �he report was weil written and were no�
concerned with its length.
The Friendly Stop was discus�ed� it� location, and the number
af teenagers and children u�ing the �top.
V. L�gislative Updete
Legislative updates wer� reviewed with no question� rai�ed.
VI . Old Buelnesa
� A. Lfbrary Automation ProJect Report
�, Director Leo announced that two �umulus terminals h�d been
installed at the Santiago Hilis Branch Library.
Director l.eo ex�al�ined the fuli re�pon�e testing pracedure
which would need 90 people �o accomplish - 45 vvlunteers and
45 staff inembers. Trustees were encouraged to participafie. ,
B. FY90/92 9udget
Director Leo suggested to Trustees that the� keep the
budgetary information thrc�ugh the coming year.
Trustee Saenz questioned a newspaper article which stated
it wouid cost �421 ,OG0 to move the Library when a new Main
Library was built. Director Leo explained that it was the
budgeted amount for FY 9C1/91 to begin preparations for
building a new Main Library, not the total �cost including
bu i I d i ng. _
1 . Public Hearing - Tuesday, June 19, 7 p.m.
Director l�eo invited the Bo�rc� of Trustees to attend
the public h�aring for accept�nce of the FY 90/91 Cifiy
budget. Tru�tees McEwan, Gorham� and Caurtney are ta

C. Hispenic Teen� Progrem
Aileen Angel , the Friendly Stop's Library Community
Specialist, joined the meeting and disaussed with the
Truste�s the accomplishm�nts of the Friendly Stop during its
fiirst we�ks of existence. Problems were also discussed
regarcling joint use of fihe facility with the day care cenfier
and possible solutions were suggested by the Tru�tees.
Librarian Gayle Meldau was men.tia,ned fior her excellent
work in chosing the Spanish book� in math and reading, and
Aileen Angel commented how helpful these books were �o the
youth using the facility. The Main Library Reference staff
was mentioned for their time spent at the Friendly Sfiop
helping the young .people.

Director Leo advi�ed that the renewal grant will be due on
� August 1 . Kerry Stern is re�pon�ible for writing i�.
Relacation aptions were discussed and Trustee Saenz
suggested community underwritir►g for a new location.
D. The Planning Prvc�ss
Director Leo discus�ed the "Looking Around" Survey. Sh�
pointed out trends in each Library and discussed how these
trends were c4nsistent with staff input from patrvns'
c4mments.
�` Director Leo advised Trustees th�t The Planning Process
will be delayed a few months to se�rch for a facili�atvr
for the meetings.
VII . New Buslness
A. �lectlon of 4ffioers FY90/91
Vice-Chairman William Courtney nominated Chaerm.an Tom
Saenz for anoth�r year as Chairman af the Board of
Trustees. Trustee McEwan seconded. The motion was carried
unanimously. Trus�kee Saenz accepted. '
Trustee McEwan nominated Trustee Cc,urtney for
i Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Trust.ee Gorham
-- seconded. The mofiion was carried unanimously. Vice-
�hairman Courtney accepted.

B. Llbrary Operetions
1 . Personn�l
Director Lea announced to Trustees fihe recruitment of a
Library Systems Operator and a new Head of Technicai
Services.
2. Compres�ed Work Week -
Director L�o announced that some Library persvnnei will
begin working a compressed work wsek beginning July 2.
This 9/80 schedule is mandated by the City to comply
with Air Quality Management District directives.
C. July Meeting Lvcation
Ju{y's meeting location wil { be Director Leo's offiae at
the Qrange Public Library, 101 North Center Street, in
4range, on July 16, at 4:30 p.m.

Friends are hol�ding a booksale at the EI Modena Branch
Library on June 23, 1Q a.m: to 3 p.m.
Friends plan an ice cream social on August 12, location
to be named later.
