ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING
February 23, 1987
I. Following a tour of potential sites for a new Main Library, the regular
meeting of the Orange Public Library Board of Trustees was called to
order at 5:10 p.m. by Trustee McEwan at El Modena Branch Library.
Present: Trustees Courtney, Gorham, McEwan, Saenz and Way. Also present,
Nora Jacob, President of the Friends of the Orange Public
Library, Director Karen A. Leo and Sheila Gannon, Secretary to
the Library Director.
II. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as received.
III. The Library Director's monthly report was reviewed and discussed.
IV. In addition to the personnel changes listed on the agenda, Karen Leo stated
that Nancy Leonard, a former Library employee, is working on a temporary
basis in the Circulation Department at the Main Library while Bobbye Heath
is on medical leave. Karen also announced that Steven Fjeldsted will fill
t�ie vacant Librarian II position at Taft Branch beginning March 23,
V. A discussion took place regarding the potential sites for a new Nain
Library which the Board visited today. Trustee McEwan said she felt more
information about the sites is needed, such as price, size, etc. Trustee
Gorham volunteered to acquire the needed information and present it at the
next meeting. Director Leo said the Killefer Park site is not being consid-
ered, that she was misinror«ed.
VI. A. It was reported that the response to the surveys regarding service to
the homebound was very gratifying,
B. Nora Jacob, President of the Friends of the Orange Public Library,
explained the intentions of the proposed program. She said the first
step had been to deterr.line whether or not service to the homebound was
needed in the City of Orange, and whether it was feasible. She stated
that the Library Director had sent a memo to Dave Demchak, Risk Manag�r
for the City, regarding the liabi�ity concern for volunteers working in
the program. Nora asked for formal support of the proposed program by
the Board and said she would like to have the proposition included on
the City Council agenda of March 10. Trustee Gorham moved that a letter
of support be sent to City Council, seconded by Trustee Courtney; motion
carried,

VII. Ka�`en gave a reva�ew of the mid-year budget report� She said we will not be �
spending �5,100 appropriate�. f�r OCLC eguipment for retrospective conversion
because it is being loaned fr�e of charge to the Library. Extra m�ney is
nee�.ed at E1 Modena Branch tb move shelving �.n the juvenile section so that
staff can see down the ai�les from the Refer.ence desk� K�.ren stated that �n
estimate of $10,000 has been. given by S�.ott Refrigerata..on �o c�verhaul the
air condit�.oning and hea�ing syst�m at the Main Library.
The CIP requ�sts are in priority order as follows;
l. New Main Library, 1987-92
2. Continuing renovation of tne Edwards House and
Ma�.n Librarya 19$7-1990
3, Taft Bran�h, exp�.nsio�., 1989�97.
4, El Modena Branch new carpeting five �ears from n�ow, 1990-91

A. Director Leo announ�ed that Karen Klan has been rec:ognizec� as the 1986
Employee of the Year f�r �.he �ity of Orange� Trustee Way moved that a

D, Nora Jacob is Oran.ge Public Library's representative to the Santiago
Library Sys��.m Adv�.sory Board and i.s c.haxrwoman of that body this year,
E. Friezlds:
Nora reported tha� �h.e Main L�brary book sale in January ra�.sed almost
$2,300 and enlis�ted approximately SO new members. She said the Friends
n.ow have regular work c.rews who process books for the sales. Dates of
the remaining sales �or �Chis �eason are as follow�;

open to the publ�,c 11 a.m, to 3 p.m.

The rlext Frienas` program will be March 9. Hulda Crooks, 90-year-old
mountain climber, will be the speaker,
The Friends of the Library are offering a logo design contest to Orange
high-school students. In addition to displays of the winning logos in
the Library, first prize will be a $50 savings bond and two $25 savings
bonds for runners-up.
The meeting adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
Next Library Board meeting will be on Monday, March 16, 4:30 p.m. , at the Main
Library.
