Present: Trustees Gorham, McEwan, Saenz and Way. Also present, Barbara Brotherton, Branch rlanager, El Modena, Ricardo Serrato, A/V Specialist and �aren Leo, Library Director. Absent: Trustee Courtney The minutes of the previdus meeting were approved as received. Reports Presented and Discussed: The Finance Director's report indicated 13.4% had been spent as of August 31, 1985; of the $17:i for local meetings, $70 had been spent and more has '�een committed. Overall, we're in good shape, Karen said. Trustee I�IcEwan explained that the City's bed tax money was available for such expenses as meetings, seminars, etc. , of a public relations nature, if our finances got into trouble. Trustee Gorham said the Friends would also help if there was a financial problem. Moved by Trustee Way, seconded by Trustee Saenz to accept the Library's monthly report. Motion carried. Agenda Items: Barbara Brotherton and Ricardo reported on the Binational Conference of the Californias, This binational conference for libraries along the U.S. Mexican border began three years ago, Barbara is currently President of the Reforma group, a Southern California organization of librarians serving Hispanics. Ricardo and Barbara produced a videotape to explain to Spanish-speaking children the use and rules of the public library. Discussion followea tkie sh.owing with suggest:ions for producing a similar videotape for the Vietnamese. Video to be shown in schools, at PTA meetings, etc. L�.brary Expansion: Councilman Barrera's letter to the Mayor and City Council supporting the expansion of the Main Library was reviewed. The Board felt they, too,, should support the expansion. Moved by Trustee Saenz, seconded by Trustee Way that a lette� be sent to City Council informing them that the Library Board of Trustees ta'as �.tiLl i�.terested in pursuing the Main Zibrary expansion, Motion carried. ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES October 21, 1985 Page three Taft Book Sale: The Taft Book Sale was a tremendous success with $542 earned, Friends: Trustee Gorham reported a problem with the non-profit status of the Friends group and Trustee McEwan recommended contacting City Attorney Furman Roberts, if he has any difficulty. Workshops: Flyers of upcoming seminars and workshops were passed around. Trustee McEwan stated that other Boards and Commissions received monies to cover cost of dinners or special events and felt the Library Board should also request a similar arrangement. An annual budget of $500 would be an appropriate amount. Also, other Board and Commission members receive a nominal meeting expense of $25 or more per meeting. Proctors: There is a need for Proctors at each �ibrary and although a flyer has been circulated, no applicants have applied. Trustee McEwan rec�mmended contacting the Explorer Scouts. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 25th at 4:30 p.m, in the offir_e of the Library Director.
