Trustee Schlund seconded, Motion carried,1.4 Approval of lVIinutcs Regular Board Meeting Held August 21, 2000 Trustee Schlund moved that the minutes be adopted as presented. Trustee Warne seconded. Motion carried.II, PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments,III, BOARD REPORTS 3.1 Reports frum Chair Massa There were no reports from Chair Massa.230 EAST CHAPMAN AVENUE ORANGE, CALIFORNIA CITY OF ORANGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND LIBRARY SERVICES ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Minutes of Meeting Held September 18, 2000 Page 2 3,2 Reports from Trustees Trustee Schlund shared with Board a recent article in the Orange County Register regarding the Fullerton Public Library's Foundation, Trustee Schlund will contact the Foundation's President for more inforrnation. IV, COMMUNITY & LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR'S REPORT 4.1 Director's Report of July, 2000 Director's Report was included in Trustees' packets, Director Wann complimented Sr. Librarian Rosanne Miller and the summer volunteers for their excellent work in providing quality programming on the Summer Reading Club 2000, Library staff had officially acknowledged the youths at the City Council meeting on September l2, 2000. Director Wann also reported that 56,820 was raised from the rental of parking spaces at Main Library and the Bank of America parking lot during the City of Orange International Street Faire, From this amount, salaries for employees will be deducted, and the final net amount divided between the two foundations in the Department. 4.2 Legislative Update There was no legislative infornlation included in Trustees' packet. 4.3 Financial Report Frnancial Report was included in Trustees' packets, V. DEPARTMENT REPORTS 5.1 City Librarian Recruitment Director Wann advised that Nora Jacob has begun the pre-employment process for the City Librarian posil1on. After succcssful completion of the pre-employment examinations, Ms, Jacob has advised Mr. Wann she will give two weeks notice to her present employer, take a week's vacation, then begin her employment at the Orange Public Library.5.2 Orange Public Library Foundation Director Wann advised Trustees that 4 board members have been selected, howcver,before formal acceptance is secured, their names will not be announced. Director Viann emphasized to the Board the high quality of people that have accepted these positions,although the interview process has been time-consuming, Consultant Bob Kiley has been instrumental in arranging appointments and providing insight into CITY OF ORANGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND LIBRARY SERVICES ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Minutes of Meeting Held September 18, 2000 Page 3 Director Wann reported that as soon as 5 members are selected, the first meeting of the foundation will be held, possibly in October 5,3 Library of California The application for membership in the Arroyo Seco Library Network will be reviewed by City Council at their September 26, 2000 meeting, When approved, the application and resolution forwarded to the California State Library 5.4 Teen Volunteer Recognition and Reception Summer youth volunteers in the Summer Reading Program were recognized at the City Council meeting held September l2, 2000, 54 teens that worked 16 hours or more at the libraries were invited to a reception at the Main Library and Council meeting, Trustee Schlund suggested a picture be taken of all volunteers and this picture be displayed in the library, VI. NEW BUSINESS 6.J Paint A Tile Sr. Librarian Rosanne Miller has initiated the Pamt A Tile program in the Orange Public Library, The 8" x 8" tiles will be hand painted by children, fired, and hung in the Main Library's Children's area. Trustees were very excited about this project and expressed their appreciation to Ms, Miller for her initiation and work on this project. 6.2 Magazine Adoption Program Again this year Library staff has continued the Magazine Adoption Program. Patrons are asked to purchase their favorite magazines for the library, Subscriptions are being handled through the Main Library's Reference section. 6.3 Orange Public Library's Technology Section Sr. Librarian Sarah Rosenblum advised Trustees the Technology Center is teaching more and more computer classes to interested patrons, with basic email and illtemet classes being the more popular. There are no charges for these classes. We are startmg a basic computer class in l/OO, Ms, Rosenblum updated inforrnation on the Link Systems grant which provides resource sharing in a pilot interlibrary loan program, a subsidiary of the California State Library project. CITY OF ORANGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND LIBRARY SERVICES ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Minutes of Meeting Held September 18, 2000 Page 4 Ms. Rosenblum and Libraty Systems Coordinator Angela Scherer are also working on the El Modena Branch Library cable project. Ms. Rosenblum, Ms. Scherer and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor Clark Smith have contacted Gilmore Associates to assist in the writing of bid specifications. This process will take several months to complete. Wiring deficiencies in the library has delayed this project, but the upgrading of cabling must be completed as soon as possible. Ms. Rosenblum, along with the City's systems consultant ACS, have also initiated a process whereby as the City disposes of their employees' PC's, they will be recycled to the library for word processing stations for patrons.
