Present: Trustees Gorham, McEwan and Way. Afso present: Gary Wann, Director ofCommunityServicesandLibrary; Hazel Ho Wang, Branch Services Manager;Eugenia Wong, Main Library and Technical Services Manager; Iona Waller, Friendly StopSupervisor; and 7an McGovney, Administrative Secretary. Absent: Trustees Brandman and Everett. II. Approval ofMinutes Trustee McEwan corrected the minutes on Page 2, "Budget FY 93/94," Line 2. The Interim City Manager's first name is Wiiliam. Trustee McEwan moved that the minutesbeacceptedascorrect. Seconded by Trustee Way. Motion carried. III. Financial Report Trustee McEwan was concerned about the minus percentages on the Expenditure Summary. Gary Wann assured her that small overages are covered by larger accounts bytheendofthefiscalyear. IV. Director's Report Trustees questioned the distribution of the Director's Report and wanted to make sure thatCityCouncilreceivesacopy. There is concern over the large personnel layoff, demotionsandtransfersthatoccurredintheLibrary. Even with these cutbacks, staff continues to offer story times and tours of the libraries. Santiago Hills Branch is now closed and thebranchstaffhasbeentransferredtoworkattheotherbranches. Legislative (Ipdate SB-566 (Roberti} has been vetoed by Govemor Wilson. VI. Unfinished Business A. Frien tly Stop Update , Friendly Stop Supervisor Iona Waller was introduced to Trustees and gave a brief background on herself. She advised that Friendly Stop is now being patroniaed by young child en and mothers, and teens seeking home work help. The satellite library has appro mately 15-20 patrons a day. B. Technicat Services Move to Bayview Basement Gary Wann, FIazel Wang and Eugenia Wong met with Interim City Manager William Cornett and discussed a possible move of the Technical Services Division to the Bayview basement. The basement is 3,000 square feet and would be a suitable location for the division. However, there is no money in the budget for a move which is anticipated to cost $18,000-$19,040. No decision has been made on this matter. G SB 355 (Roberti) This bill has been vetoed by Governor Wilson. D. Sale of INLEX, Inc., to DRA The Monterey office of INLEX, Inc., will remain open for another year, and then be moved to DRA's headquarters in St. Louis. Eugenia distributed a news bulletin prepazed by DRA regarding its purchase of INLEX, Inc. Also, Eugenia updated Trustees on the Notification System which has recently been installed in Fairfaac County Public Library. E. New Library Hours as of October 4 Hazel Ho Wang distributed a schedule which shows the reduction in service hours since August 24, 1992. Complaints from patrons about the minimum service hours continue. 2 ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRqRy BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES OF MEETING OF OCTOBER 18, 1993 nL New Business f1• Main Library Beautification Project Eugenia Wong and several staffmembers have been working on improving theappearanceandworkingconditionsattheMainLibrary. With help from theFriendsofffieOrangePubiicLibrary, interior painting and vertical blinds wiil beaddedtotheMainLibrary. Trustees wiil send a letter to Council eapressing theBoard's appreciation to the Friends for this generous donation. Overcrowded Shetves at the Main Library Eugenia Wong is looking into the possibility of adding more shelving at MainLibrarytorelievethecrowdedshelFconditions. G Christmas-Nery Year Hotiday Hours & Closing For the past several years, branch libraries have been closed the week betweenChristmasandNewYeartosaveutilitycostsandallowemployeestofurlough ortakevacationtimetospendtimewiththeirfamilies. This item will be broughtbacktonextmonth's meeting after City Council has decided if a City-wideproposalforthatweekwillbemade. VI77. Public Presentations There were no pubiic presentations.
