A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING
APPRECIATION TO CALIFORNIA STATE
SENATOR JOHN R. LEWIS, 33RD DISTRICT AND
COMMENDING HIM FOR TWENTY-
ONE YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED
SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF
CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, State Senator John R. Lewis was elected to represent Orange County in
the State Assembly in 1980 at the age of 26, and currently holds the record of being the
third youngest person ever elected to the State
Legislature.A native Californian, John has spent most of his life in Orange County, and received
a degree in Political Science from the University of Southern California. Inspired at an early age
by the conservative political philosophy of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan, at 21 he served
on the California Executive Steering Committee of Reagan's presidential campaign and on
the Delegate Selection Committee of the California Republican
party.After John's victorious campaign on the State Assembly, he was re-elected
five more times to that post. In 1991, he won in a special election to the State Senate, and the next
year was elected to a full term in the newly created 33'd District. He was re-e1ected in 1996
to his second and final term with nearly 70%
of the vote.During Senator Lewis' political career, his legislative
pnontles included: reduciog excessive taxes; eliminating costly state regulations;
implementiog back-to-basics educational reforms and cutting wasteful government spending. He
served on numerous Senate committees,and since 1994 was Vice-Chairman of the Rules
Committee, a key leadership position within both the Senate
Republican Caucus and the California Senate.In 1999, The City of Orange developed a Master
Plan of Parks, which identified a parkland deficiency and a specific need for lighted sports
fields. On behalf of Orange, Senator Lewis was successful in obtaining $974,000 in Park Bond
funds through the State budget, which will be used for development of recreational amenities
at
the new Prospect Street community park.As Senator Lewis reached his term limit, he retires
from the political arena and will pursue other interests. As a lifetime fan of the Anaheim
Angels, he will spend more time pursuing fly balls at Edison Field. More importantly, he will get to spend
more time at his City of Orange home with his wife Suzanne in raising their
two young children James and Jennie.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City
Council of the City of Orange expresses to Senator John R. Lewis its sincere appreciation for
21 years of loyal and dedicated service to the State of California and the City of Orange. On
behalf of a grateful community, the Orange City Council wishes John continued success and prosperity
ADOPTED, tl1is 13th day of February, 2000.
