I. CALL TO ORDER (3:10 p.m.)
1.1 Pledge of Allegiance
Chair Douglas Westfall led the Pledge of Allegiance.
1.2 Roll Call
Trustees Present: Chair Douglas Westfall, Vice Chair Jonell Schlund, and Trustee Nancy
Collins
Staff Present: Library Services Director Yolanda Moreno, and Executive Assistant Jan
Reichert
1.3 Adoption of Agenda
Vice Chair Schlund moved to approve the agenda as presented; Trustee Collins seconded
the motion, and it carried unanimously.
1.4 Approval of Minutes
Trustee Collins moved to approve the minutes of the August 17, 2009 meeting as presented;
Vice Chair Schlund seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.
II. LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT
2.1 Monthly Report for September 2009
Library Director Moreno gave a verbal report:
• Library continues to cross-train all staff for the different sections of the library.
• Mark Buchner, 20-hr Library Page at the Main Library, resigned in August to go back to
school. His position will not be filled.
• Sherry Hari, 40-hr Sr. Library Clerk at Taft Branch Library, is retiring at the end of the
year after 30+ years with the city.
• Jennie Sloan, 40-hr Sr. Library Clerk at Main Library, will be leaving the library early
next year.
• Teen Volunteer Recognition Program was held Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the Main Library
community room. Trustee Nancy Collins attended the program on behalf of the Library
Board of Trustees. After the program, teens walked to the council chambers where they
were recognized by the Mayor and City Council for their volunteer hours.

• The Endangered Magazine Program has collected $844 for magazines on the endangered
magazine list. The program runs through Oct. 15 and the library is hoping for $1,000.
Two Chapman University interns who work for the OC Register put information about
the program on their blog. Adult Reference staff received several phone calls from
people asking about the Endangered Magazine Program based on this blog.
• Children’s Services staff held a Children’s Game Night on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in the
Main Library community room. One patron who attended with his family told staff that
he grew up loving board games and is very excited that the library is having these game
night programs. He mentioned that he has connections with vendors who can give the
library additional board games for the Children’s Game Night. He will make contact
with these vendors and ask them to call Children’s Services Library Assistant Linda
Cundiff.
• The first California Noir, Mystery book discussion, The Maltese Falcon, was held on
Monday, Sept. 21. Nine people attended.
• Friends of the Orange Public Library gave the library their second installment check of
$26,620 for library materials. The first check of $20,000 was given to the library back in
May. The check will be presented to Library Services Director Moreno from Peter
Wetzel of the Friends at the Oct. 13 City Council meeting.
• The Friends will present an early literacy program on Saturday, Oct. 24 with special guest
local children’s author Angela Russ-Ayon. Children’s Library Assistant Monica Barrette
who is attending library school wrote a grant. As part of the grant the Friends are giving
the library $2,000 to purchase easy reader books. In conjunction with this program the
Friends will hold a children’s book sale from 12-4 p.m.
• The Library and the Friends will have a table at the City’s Treats in the Street event on
Thursday, Oct. 29 in the Plaza. There will be a wheel for children to spin and win prizes.
• Local History Librarian Lizeth Ramirez took the test and passed it to become a Certified
Archivist.
2.2 Financial Report for August 31, 2009
The City has changed over to a new financial system, Eden Financial Solutions so you will
notice the changes to the attached Financial Report. All the account numbers were changed as
well and staff is learning this new system. Received and filed.
III. BOARD REPORTS
3.1 Report from Chair Westfall
Chair Westfall reported that Fresno County Public Library’s Local History Librarian Bill Secrest
Jr. is interested in housing the photos of the Edison project to build dams at Shaver and
Huntington Lakes up in the Sierra Nevada. This contact information was given to Chair Westfall
from Local History Librarian Ramirez.
3.2 Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison
Library Foundation Liaison Jonell Schlund reported that the Street Fair parking lot fundraiser
was a huge success bringing in $22,351.31. The Foundation is hosting a BBQ on Saturday, Oct.
17, 5-9 p.m. to honor Dr. Mike & Jean Abdalla, major donors to the Foundation. The BBQ

will also be the kickoff of the 2010 Library Legacy Campaign. Board Member Charlene
Baldwin, Dean of Chapman University Leatherby Libraries, resigned from the Board. She has
offered her replacement, Kevin Ross, Associate Dean of the Leatherby Libraries. Library
Services Director Moreno reported that she received two checks from the Foundation at the Sept.
22 City Council meeting. One check in the amount of $1,840 from the Foundation’s Annual
Fund and Utility Billing insert is for children’s books, CD’s and DVD’s. The second check in
the amount of $3,500 from the Foundation’s Summer Family Film Festival is also for children’s
books, CD’s and DVD’s. Library Services Director Moreno also reported that at the October 27
City Council meeting the Foundation and Dr. & Mrs. Michael Abdalla will present a check for
$50,000 to the City as payment toward Orange Public Library Foundation Main Library capital
campaign commitment. Their $50,000 gift is to name the “Dr. & Mrs. Michael Abdalla Fiction
Area” at the Orange Public Library & History Center (Main Library). Three new Board
members have been appointed – Jeanne Carter, Joe Hagler, and Gary Mead.
3.3 Reports from Trustees
Trustee Collins reported that one more person has been recruited for the Library Board of
Trustees. This person has submitted an application. There are now two potential candidates for
the vacant Trustee positions. The Mayor is aware of the two vacancies and should make the
appointments soon.

Trustee Collins moved, and Vice Chair Schlund seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting
