Minutes of Board Meeting, September 15, 2008

I. CALL TO ORDER (3:05 p.m.)
1.1 Pledge of Allegiance
Chair Douglas Westfall led the Pledge of Allegiance.
1.2 Roll Call
Trustees Present: Chair Douglas Westfall, Vice Chair Jonell Schlund, Trustee Nancy
Collins, and Trustee Mark Clemens.
Trustees Absent: Trustee Paul Hughes.
Staff Present: Library Services Manager Yolanda Moreno, and Executive Assistant Jan
Reichert.
1.3 Adoption of Agenda
Vice Chair Schlund moved to approve the agenda as presented; Trustee Clemens seconded
the motion, and it carried unanimously.
1.4 Approval of Minutes
Trustee Clemens moved to approve the minutes of the meeting of July 21, 2008 as
presented; Trustee Collins seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.
II. LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT
2.1 Monthly Report, August/September 2008
Library Services Manager Yolanda Moreno gave a verbal report:
• The Friends of the OPL recently gave $16,291 in donations to the library.
• The City will replace all current urinals with waterless urinals in the men’s restrooms.
Facility Services staff recently installed waterless urinals at all three of the libraries. The
waterless urinals will save 40,000 gallons of water per urinal.
• September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. All replacement cards are free. OPL will take
library card applications on the road to promote Library Card Sign-Up Month. Children’s
Services Library Assistant Linda Cundiff will begin this process with the YWCA, and will
then follow with class visits to local schools.

• Summer Reading Club teen volunteers will be honored with a reception on September 23,
3:30 p.m. in the Weimer Room, followed with City Council recognition in the Council
Chambers at 4:30 p.m. Trustees are encouraged to attend.
2.2 Financial Reports for July and August, 2008
Received and filed.
III. BOARD REPORTS
3.1 Report from Chair Westfall
None.
3.2 Report from Foundation Liaison
Ms. Schlund reported that there was no OPLF Board meeting in August. The Gala, A Step Back
in Time, will take place on Sunday, September 21. She encouraged all Trustees to attend.
3.3 Reports from Trustees
None.
IV. OLD BUSINESS
4.1 Update on proposed photo display and Nov. 13 program at the El Modena Branch Library
The El Modena Branch Library has received some photos of area veterans for the photo display.
One or more digital frames will be used, presenting the images as a digital slide show. The Nov.
13 program is generating a lot of excitement in the local community, and good attendance is
expected. This program will be the first phase of the “Shades of Orange – El Modena Barrio”
project.
4.2 Update, 2nd Annual Library Spelling Bee
Trustee Collins reported that the Children’s Spelling Bee is going very well, with approximately
100 participants signed up so far. The Spell-Offs for grades 1-6 will take place on Oct. 7-9, 4:30-
5:30 p.m. Trustees signed up to help as follows: Oct. 7 – Jonell Schlund; Oct. 8 – Paul Hughes;
and Oct. 9 – Doug Westfall. Vice Chair Schlund will order all the prize medals.
Commander Chuck Street will be the MC for the Adult Spelling Bee. A suggestion was made to
have the winners of the Children’s Spelling Bee return to the Adult Spelling Bee for pictures with
Commander Chuck Street. Trustee Collins reported that there are six adult teams so far, with
eight as the goal. Library Services Director Nora Jacob mailed a letter in June to AT&T asking
for a $5,000 sponsorship. A promotional banner will be going up on North Glassell Street soon.
Trustee Collins asked if information about OPL’s Literacy Program could be displayed at the
Spelling Bee. Ms. Moreno will ask Adult Services Senior Librarian Kitty Crary to contact
READ/OC, which coordinates the Adult Literacy Program, for handouts.

V. NEW BUSINESS
5.1 Update, New Orange Public Library Programs
• Reach Out And Read (ROAR) – Children’s Services staff has started the ROAR
program at all three libraries. The program provides volunteers to read stories to kids at
drop-in storytimes. Currently, there are 30+ volunteers. The average attendance has
been eight children per storytime. The Orange Rotary Club has expressed interest in the
ROAR program. Children’s Services staff will work with Rotarians to bring them aboard
as ROAR volunteers.
• Traveling Book Club – This new program is being offered by the Adult/Reference
Services Division. Staff will put together 10 bags, each of which will include paperback,
LP and audio volumes of a given title. These bags are available to local book clubs, and
will be available for pickup and checkout at the Customer Service Desk. The Friends of
the OPL have generously given $150 to sponsor one of the Traveling Book Club bags.
• New Workshops from Adult & Young Adult Services -- YA Librarian Ryan Gan
offered a free SAT prep workshop on Saturday, Sept. 6, which was well attended and
very popular. Adult Services Librarians Kurt Keesling and David Price are offering three
workshops on free resources/databases: Teen Homework Help (Saturday, Oct. 4, 3-4
p.m.), Genealogy Resources (Saturday, Nov. 8, 3-4 p.m.), and Job Searching Resources
(Thursday, Dec. 4, 4-5 p.m.).
VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS
o “A Step Back in Time – The ‘40s,” Library Foundation gala – Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, Orange
Public Library & History Center, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Cost is $50 per person.
o 2nd Annual Orange Spelling Bee (both Community/Adult Bee and Children’s Bees), Saturday,
Oct. 18, 2008, Orange Public Library & History Center. Community/Adult Bee begins at 6 p.m.
VI. PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
VII. ADJOURNMENT
Trustee Collins moved, and Vice Chair Schlund seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting
at 3:50 p.m. The motion carried unanimously. The next meeting will be held on Monday,
October 20, 2008, 3 p.m. in the Staff Conference Room, Orange Public Library & History Center,
407 E. Chapman Avenue.
