Minutes of Board Meeting held March 17, 2008
Staff Conference Room, Orange Public Library & History Center

I. CALL TO ORDER (3:10 p.m.)
1.1 Pledge of Allegiance
Chair Douglas Westfall led the Pledge of Allegiance.
1.2 Roll Call
Trustees Present: Chair Douglas Westfall, Vice Chair Jonell Schlund, Trustee Nancy
Collins, Trustee Mark Clemens, and Trustee Paul Hughes.
Staff Present: Library Services Director Nora Jacob, Admin Assistant Jan Reichert.
1.3 Adoption of Agenda
Vice Chair Schlund moved to approve the agenda as presented; Trustee Hughes seconded
the motion, and it carried unanimously.
1.4 Approval of Minutes
Trustee Collins moved to approve the minutes of February 25, 2008 as presented; Trustee
Clemens seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.
II. LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT
2.1 Monthly Report for March 2008
Ms. Jacob reported on the highlights for the month:
• OPL Leadership Academy had its 2nd class meeting on February 28. The teams’
assignment was to answer, “If you could recommend adding any 1.0 FTE to the OPL
organization chart, what would you do and why?” Each of the five teams agreed that an
additional Tech person was needed for the Technology Section. Each team put together a
three-minute PowerPoint presentation on how they arrived at this conclusion.
• Recruitment is moving forward for the following positions – 40-hr Lending Services
Supervisor; 40-hr Adult/Local History Librarian; and 19-hr Library Assistant at Taft.
Library Page and Clerk interviews are underway for those part-time vacancies.
• Saturday, March 22, CALTAC is hosting its Southern California regional workshop in
the Main Library community room. The featured speaker will be Dr. Ken Haycock,
Director of the San Jose State University, School of Library and Information Science.
Trustee Clemens, Vice Chair Schlund, and Ms. Jacob will attend the workshop.

• Ms. Jacob reported that OPL submitted three applications by library staff for tuition
support in graduate Library & Information Science programs to a grant initiative funded
with federal dollars through the California State Library.
2.2 Financial Report for March 2008
Received and filed.
III. BOARD REPORTS
3.1 Report from Chair Westfall
Chair Westfall reported that he has photos of a 1950 farmhouse that used to be located on Collins
Avenue in Orange. He also added that a 30-second PSA promoting the library and local history
that he produced through his video class is currently running on the City’s cable channel.
3.2 Report from Foundation Liaison
Vice Chair Schlund reported that the Foundation is working to obtain volunteer leadership for
the next phase of its fundraising campaign. The Foundation’s Gala will be June 22, 2008 at the
Main Library. It will have a ‘40s retro theme. The fundraising goal is to net at least $45K. Ms.
Jacob added that she had recently met with a prospective donor to name the Children’s Garden.
3.3 Reports from Trustees
Vice Chair Schlund announced her engagement, to the delight and congratulations of all in
attendance. Trustee Hughes reported that he will submit another essay for the summer issue of
the Orange Progress. He also inquired about gifts to the library and how much money we have
received. A suggestion was made that the library might want to offer free programs/classes to
people who have recently lost their jobs and/or fallen on hard times. Ms. Jacob will touch base
with staff about this.
IV. OLD BUSINESS

V. NEW BUSINESS
5.1 Planning Update & Discussion, 2nd Annual Library Spelling Bee
Ms. Jacob and Trustee Collins met recently to begin planning the 2nd Annual Spelling Bee.
There will be two separate dates – October 18 for the Adult Spelling Bee and sometime in
November for the Children’s Spelling Bee. At the next meeting, a variety of job opportunities
for Board members will be presented. There are three prospective MCs for the Spelling Bee:
Commander Chuck Street, Gary Remland, and Orange Police Capt. Dave Hill. Time Warner
will again be involved with the Spelling Bee, and Trustee Collins’ son will assist. The next
immediate step will be to focus on securing corporate sponsors. Winners of the Spelling Bees
will receive gift certificates.

VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS
o “Chuck Jones, Director: More Than Nine Lives” program featuring Linda Jones and two
animated short films – Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 3:30-5:00 p.m. at Orange Public Library &
History Center (rescheduled from Thursday, January 24).
o “The Bells Are Ringing”: Dedication of El Camino Real bell on library’s History Walk, and
unveiling of historic handbell in History Center – Saturday, April 5, 2008, 11 a.m. at Orange
Public Library & History Center.
o Library Foundation gala – Sunday, June 22, 2008, Orange Public Library & History Center, 4:00
– 8:00 p.m.

VIII. ADJOURNMENT
Trustee Clemens moved, and Trustee Hughes seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting at
4:05 p.m. The motion carried unanimously. The next meeting will be held on Monday, April
21, 3 p.m. in the Staff Conference Room, Orange Public Library & History Center.
