Minutes of Board Meeting held April 16, 2007
Staff Conference Room
Orange Public Library & History Center, 407 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange
I. CALL TO ORDER (3:05 p.m.)
1.1 Pledge of Allegiance
Chair Doug Westfall led the Pledge of Allegiance.
1.2 Roll Call
Trustees Present: Chair Douglas Westfall, Trustee Nancy Collins, Trustee Mark Clemens,
Trustee Paul Hughes, and Vice Chair Jonell Schlund.
Staff Present: Library Services Director Nora Jacob and Admin Assistant Jan Reichert.
1.3 Adoption of Agenda
Trustee Clemens moved to approve the agenda as presented; Trustee Hughes seconded the
motion, and it carried unanimously.
1.4 Approval of Minutes
Trustee Clemens moved to approve the Minutes of the March 26, 2007 meeting as
presented; Trustee Collins seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.
II. LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT
2.1 Monthly Report for March, 2007
Ms. Jacob gave a verbal report:
o The staff move back into the new Main Library is complete. Staff is working to finalize
the building for its April 21 re-opening to the public.
o Budget preparation for the next fiscal year has started.
2.2 Financial Report for March, 2007
Received and filed. Ms. Jacob reported that money is being transferred to cover additional items
and décor that are needed at the Orange Public Library & History Center.
III. BOARD REPORTS
3.1 Report from Chair Westfall
Chair Westfall said how thankful everyone is to enjoy and appreciate the new library.

3.2 Report from Foundation Liaison
Vice Chair Schlund gave updates on the upcoming OPLF Gala (4-19-07) and Golf Tournament
(4-23-07). OPLF will present a capital campaign check to the mayor at the Grand Re-opening
Celebration on April 21, with a “for-real” donation of $703,000 to the City shortly thereafter.
3.3 Reports from Trustees
Trustee Hughes will meet with Director Jacob on Tuesday, May 1, to discuss his focus and role
on the Board.
IV. OLD BUSINESS
4.1 Update, Main Library Expansion
4.1.1 Construction progress report
Ms. Jacob updated Board on what’s happening the week of April 16-20:
o Staff training will take place all week on the new services and areas of the new
library.
o Fire drills have been scheduled.
o Building Inspector to sign off on the building Monday, April 16.
o The Giving Tree installation will be completed.
o Three giant local history photos will be installed.
o Major signage is going up throughout the building.
o Art Angles will be hanging various plaques, original History Walk watercolors,
and artwork.
o The Cut-Loose Quilters’ dedication will be Wednesday, April 18, at 7 p.m.
o The fountain will be completed by Thursday, April 19. That evening is the
OPLF Gala.
o The “Save the Fountain” dedication will be Friday, April 20, at 6 p.m.
4.1.2 Grand Re-Opening Celebration, April 21
Ms. Jacob updated Trustees on the Grand Re-Opening Celebration.
o Trustees were given samples of the giveaway promotional items and a “fast
facts” brochure.
o Homework Center and Local History brochures will be available to patrons.
o Each patron who uses the self-checkout machines will receive a magnet that
includes basic information about our libraries.
o Orange Magazine is featuring the Orange Public Library & History Center in its
Spring issue, due out this week. Copies will be made available for the Gala and
the Grand Re-Opening Celebration.
o The U.S. Postal Service will be selling commemorative items on April 21.
o Original Chuck Jones artwork from a “Read to Succeed” campaign will be
framed and hung at the base of the stairway.
4.1.3 Spelling Bee in support of Adult Literacy Program
Trustee Collins reported that more detailed information will be presented at the May
meeting.

4.1.4 Update, Year of the Library 2007
As Ms. Jacob reported at the February meeting, activities and programs are being
planned by Chapman University, Santiago Canyon College and Orange Public Library
for the “Year of the Library 2007.” Trustees were asked to mark their calendars for the
following special events:
o Sept. 24: “Building Libraries, Building Memories” will be celebrated with a
reception in the Orange Public Library & History Center, with public readings
by the award-winning SCC debate team members of memoir excerpts including
some from local history interviews.
o Sept. 25: Chapman University Leatherby Libraries will open a new photo
exhibit, “Faces of the World” featuring works by James Hackbarth. Both OPL
and SCC will also begin exhibitions of Mr. Hackbarth’s photos on the same
date.
o Sept. 26: Efforts are underway by SCC to get author Lisa See as a guest
speaker. It is hoped that Ms. See might also do a program at the Orange Public
Library & History Center – more on this at the next meeting.
V. NEW BUSINESS

VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS
o Gala, Grand Re-Opening – By invitation only, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, April 19, 2007 @ Orange
Public Library & History Center, hosted by the Orange Public Library Foundation.
o Grand Re-Opening Celebration of Orange Public Library & History Center, 10 a.m.,
Saturday, April 21, 2007.
o Steve Ambriz Legacy Golf Tournament & Golf Ball Drop (followed by dinner), Monday,
April 23, 2007, @ Alta Vista Country Club in Placentia.
VII. PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT
Vice Chair Schlund moved, and Trustee Clemens seconded the motion, to adjourn the
meeting at 4 p.m; the motion carried unanimously. The next meeting will be held on May 21,
2007, 3:00 p.m., in the Conference Room of Orange Public Library & History Center, 407 E.
Chapman Avenue.
