03-26-2007 LBOT MINUTES - APPROVED CITY OF ORANGE LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Minutes of Board Meeting held March 26, 2007 Staff Conference Room Orange Public Library & History Center, 407 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange I. CALL TO ORDER (3:05 p.m.) 1.1 Pledge of Allegiance Chair Doug Westfall led the Pledge of Allegiance. 1.2 Roll Call Trustees Present: Chair Douglas Westfall, Vice Chair Jonell Schlund, Trustee Nancy Collins, Trustee Mark Clemens, and Trustee Paul Hughes. Staff Present: Library Services Director Nora Jacob, and Admin Assistant Jan Reichert. 1.3 Adoption of Agenda Vice Chair Schlund moved to approve the agenda as presented; Trustee Clemens seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously. 1.4 Approval of Minutes Trustee Collins moved to approve the Minutes of the February 26, 2007 meeting as presented; Vice Chair Schlund seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously. II. LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT 2.1 Monthly Report for February, 2007 Ms. Jacob gave a verbal report: o Staff moved into the new Main Library March 19. o Contractors are finishing up their work in the next few weeks. o Chuck Jones Center for Creativity would like to collaborate with the library on displaying Chuck Jones’ work in the new library. TBC. o Santiago Library System Advisory Board is seeking a volunteer to represent OPL. Chair Westfall volunteered to represent the Orange Public Library on this board. 2.2 Financial Report for February, 2007 Received and filed. Ms. Jacob reported that a fair amount of money has been carried over to OPL’s printing and office supply budget. Business cards will be ordered for Trustees. BOARD REPORTS 3.1 Report from Chair Westfall Chair Westfall reported that local historian Jim Sleeper travels to Central America every year, and he is in the process of tracking down negatives of his travels that have some historic value for OPL’s local history collection. 3.2 Report from Foundation Liaison Vice Chair Schlund reported on the upcoming Library Foundation Gala, set for April 19. In addition, consultant Craig Hightower met with the Board to give direction on its Capital Campaign. A new proposal and approach for the Capital Campaign will be presented to the Board soon. 3.3 Reports from Trustees None. IV. OLD BUSINESS 4.1 Update, Main Library Expansion 4.1.1 Tour of building! Director Nora Jacob gave Trustees a guided tour of the new library. 4.1.2 Construction progress report Ms. Jacob reported: o The contractor is more than 100 days over schedule. o The fountain is still a work in progress. o Signage is going up, books are going back on the shelves. 4.1.3 Grand Re-Opening Celebration Ms. Jacob reported that things are moving right along to plan this April 21 event. Staff and community volunteers meet on a weekly basis to plan it. The program will start promptly at 10 a.m., and the doors to the library will open around 11:30 a.m. There will be lots of music, food, and giveaways to please everyone, including an “Adventures Start Here!” passport activity. 4.1.4 Spelling Bee in support of Adult Literacy Program Trustee Collins updated the Board on the Spelling Bee planned for Sept. 15. Several possible graphics for a logo were passed around, and each Board member initialed his/her choice. Plastic orange “Literacy” bracelets will be given out at registration. Larry Labrado, Jr., of SCE has invited the library to apply for grant funding to help sponsor of the Spelling Bee. The Board discussed sponsorship opportunities, and the consensus was to go with one or two major sponsors at $10,000 each. Two suggestions were SCE and the Gas Company. At the next meeting, discussion will involve how to structure the sponsorship hierarchy. CITY OF ORANGE DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY SERVICES ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD February 26, 2007 Page 3 V. NEW BUSINESS 5.1 Update: Year of the Library, 2007 Ms. Jacob reported that representatives from the libraries of Chapman University, Santiago Canyon College and Orange Public Library meet monthly to plan and implement joint activities for the Year of the Library. On Sept. 24, “Building Libraries, Building Memories” will be celebrated with a reception in the Weimer Room and then public readings by SCC debate team members of historical Orange memoirs, in Council Chambers. On Sept. 25, Chapman University Leatherby Libraries will open a new photo exhibit, “Faces of the World” featuring works by James Hackbarth. Both OPL and SCC will also begin exhibitions of Mr. Hackbarth’s photos on the same date. And on Sept. 26, efforts are underway by SCC to get author Lisa See as a guest speaker. It is hoped that Ms. See might also do a program at the Orange Public Library & History Center. VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS o Gala, Grand Re-Opening – By invitation only, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, April 19, 2007 @ Orange Public Library & History Center, hosted by the Orange Public Library Foundation. o Grand Re-Opening Celebration of Orange Public Library & History Center, 10 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2007. o Steve Ambriz Legacy Golf Tournament & Golf Ball Drop (followed by dinner), Monday, April 23, 2007, @ Alta Vista Country Club in Placentia. VII. PUBLIC COMMENT Chair Westfall congratulated and thanked Ms. Jacob on her outstanding efforts and tremendous energy for getting the new library built. VIII. ADJOURNMENT Trustee Clemens moved, and Vice Chair Schlund seconded the motion, to adjourn the meeting at 4:15 p.m; the motion carried unanimously. The next meeting will be held on April 16, 2007, 3:00 p.m., in the Conference Room of Orange Public Library & History Center, 407 E.
