II. LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S REPORT
2.1 Monthly Report for May 2011
Ms. Moreno gave a verbal report:
• Per direction from City Mgr, the library is looking at its frozen & vacant
positions to determine which vacant positions can be eliminated from the
budget. Frozen positions have already been taken out of the budget, but vacant
ones have not. Library Management staff is taking one final look at the vacant
positions and justifying those positions they want to keep.
• The Library is changing the number of checkout limits for books from 50 to 25.
• Former Library Board of Trustees Chair Doug Westfall donated a cannon ball to
Local History. He received it from a donor, who wishes to remain anonymous,

who found it in Santiago Creek. After doing research, it was determined that the
cannon ball's size, weight and make are consistent with those of pre-1840s
Spanish cannon balls. Local History will decide on how to display the cannon
ball.
• Mike Vogelvang is making and donating the missing heron on the library
fountain. He was waiting on one part in order to finish the heron, which Ms.
Moreno received from Community Services Department. Once Mr. Voglevang
picks up the part he can finish the heron and it will be ready to install. Ms.
Moreno is getting estimates for the installation.
• Friends of the Orange Public Library (FOPL) had a three day book sale on May
5, 6 and 7. Their net profit was approximately $2,100. The FOPL are checking
into the possibility of having a booth to sell books at the Farmers Market that
recently opened near Chapman University.
• The recently purchased Freegal product has already had 2,000 hits, and the
library had a soft opening for its Rocket Languages product. Rocket Languages
is a comprehensive online product that allows the patron to learn one of 10
languages on their own terms and in their own time.
• Nora Jacob Executive Director of the Orange Public Library Foundation (OPLF)
is resigning from paid employment effective July 1. She will continue to assist
OPLF by volunteering 2-4 hours per week.
2.2 Financial Report for April 2011
Received and filed. Overall the library is under budget and staff only purchases what is
needed.
III. BOARD REPORTS
3.1 Report from Chair
Chair Collins continues to meet with Ms. Moreno monthly to discuss and help put
together the agenda for the Board meetings.
3.2 Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison (OPLF)
Ms. Moreno, in the absence of Ms. Schlund, reported that Finance Committee Chair Joe
Hagler briefly recapped the Finance Committee’s revision of the OPLF Investment
Policy. Board Member Larry Tannas asked, and the Board approved, for a four month
leave of absence due to his work load. The Legacy Gala profit was $40,000 (above the
$11,000 raised from the “Raise Your Paddle for Children’s Books”).
3.3 Reports from Trustees
Trustee Freeman visited the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and
Foundations (ALTAFF) website and printed and handed out copies of information he
found would be useful to Trustees.

IV. OLD BUSINESS
4.1 Further Discussion on Gift Registry’s
Chair Collins reported that Barnes & Noble (B&N) is very excited about working with
the library by hosting a Barnes & Noble Registry/Bookfair. The Bookfair is an
opportunity for the library to raise money through in-store and online book sales by
encouraging our supporters to shop at B&N stores and online during a designated
period. B&N will publicize the Bookfair at their registers (flyers, posters, etc.); display
the library wish lists in-store; give the library publicity to place at its customer service
desk; and make the wish list available on B&N website. Chair Collins added that if the
city will allow we can put a link on the library website to the B&N wish list. In
addition to the materials purchased in-store, the library will receive money back as
follows:
Up to $2,000 in sales = 10% cash or 15% B&N gift card
$2,000 to $10,000 in sales = 15% cash or 20% B&N gift card
$10,000 or more in sales = 20% cash or 25% B&N gift card
It was added that for in-store purchases a valid voucher or mention of participation in
the Bookair must be presented at the register prior to the transaction for the purchases to
count towards the library Bookfair. When purchases are made just for the library B&N
will deliver them. Trustee Hugo inquired if purchases can be made from any B&N.
Chair Collins will check into this and report back at the June meeting.
Chair Collins said B&N would like to give a presentation on incorporating digital
devices and eLending in our library system. She thought this might be a good program
to offer the public on how to use digital devices.
Ms. Moreno said she and Ms. Miller will go over all the information given to them
about the Bookfair, decide on a month, outline what staff and Library Board
involvement should be, and then bring back to the Board for any further discussion.
The contact person at B&N and for the Bookfair is Shay Beckman, Community
Relations Manager.
Vice Chair Schlund contacted Macy’s, which has a shopping date once a year to benefit
non-profits. If the library participated, it would sell tickets to this special shopping day
and receive a percentage of sales. This is another opportunity for the Board to consider.
4.2 Library Board of Trustees – Fact Finding & Brainstorming on Role of Trustees –
updated spreadsheet from Trustee
Trustee Freeman distributed the updated fact-finding sheet to everyone. For most of
the libraries surveyed Library Trustee’s are an Advisory Board. After brainstorming
what they want their role to be, Board Members came up with the following
recommendations for consideration:
• Set library policies

• Submit program ideas – Trustees do the research and prep work, and then bring
back for library consideration
• Research applicable grants and/or programs – Ms. Moreno will forward the
grant websites she receives via email to Chair Collins
• Ambassadors to the library – Trustees make the connections for the library
• Participation in library associations such as ALTAFF and California Association
of Library Trustees and Commissioners (CALTAC)
• Outreach to local private and public schools –presence at Back to School Nights
in September promoting library cards, PTA’s, etc.
• Local History outreach – Trustees as reporters for the library
• Voice of the community – What are you hearing? What does the community
want from its library?
• Research and oversee establishing an Adult Literacy Program at the Library –
This is part of a long range plan
This continues to be a work in progress. Chair Collins asked Trustees to continue to
brainstorm ideas and email them to her. Trustees and library staff will finalize this list
and come up recommendations to present to Mayor Carolyn Cavecche in July.
There was discussion on the recently opened Farmers Market in Orange, which is on
Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon, and Library Trustees presence promoting the library. The
FOPL are looking into hosting a booth so it was suggested that FOPL and Library
Trustees take turns manning a booth at the Farmers Market. This will be discussed in
further detail at the June meeting.
4.3 July 3rd Event
Sign up sheet for shifts and what is needed for the booth will be brought to the next
meeting. The booth will be manned by FOPL and Library Trustee volunteers. The
giant spin wheel will again be available that people will spin for prizes and candy.
Groups who participate in the July 3rd event must attend a mandatory meeting. Ms.
Reichert will email this date to the Trustees.
V. NEW BUSINESS
5.1 Appointment from Library Board of Trustees to Friends Liaison
Trustees will rotate attendance at the monthly FOPL meetings and present their report at
Library Board meetings. Vice Chair Schlund volunteered to attend the June 13
meeting, 1 p.m. in the Orange Rotary Conference Room, and Chair Collins volunteered
