The money will be used to purchase DVD’s; Books on CD; materials for National Library Week (April CITY OF ORANGE DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY SERVICES ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES October 17, 2011 Page 2 2012); World Book Encyclopedia set; non-fiction adult books; and After School Edge Station – for 3rd and 4th graders. • The Orange Public Library Foundation (OPLF) was also presented with a library Wish List at its Oct. 10 meeting. Items on the Wish List included $10,000 for E- books (platform and e-books), $2,000 for children’s books, CD’s and storytime materials, and $1,200 for movie licensing. With the popularity of e-books rising and patrons inquiring if our library is going to get them, library staff is currently looking at two platforms for E-books – Overdrive and Baker & Taylor. The library is hoping to offer e-books starting in spring 2012. • Social Media classes offered at the library are going very well. The next class offered is Facebook on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 9-11 a.m. • Everything Old is New Again: Digital Collections, preview of newly digitized content from the 70s and 80s, Monday, November 7, 5:30-7 p.m., Main Library community room. Grant money received from the “Pitch an Idea” was used to digitize over 200 audio and video materials only available in broadcast format. While all the newly digitized tapes will be available to the public for viewing in the near future, this event will only preview a small selection. City Council, all support groups, and historical societies have been invited to this event. • The City Budget is expected to be adopted at the Nov. 8 City Council meeting. • A customer service story to share – Acting Sr. Librarian Irma Morales and Adult Services Librarian Steve Chaput did outreach at Orange Education Center (OEC) earlier this month. Ms. Morales received a thank you letter from the OEC Student Services Coordinator saying their visit was a total hit with the students, faculty, and staff. The response was so overwhelming that Ms. Morales and Mr. Chaput have been asked for a return visit. Ms. Morales and her staff will continue to outreach to the OEC. • The Career Transitions data base the library received free for 18-months has expired. The cost to the library to renew is $2,500. Staff will look at the statistics for this data base and, based on the results, will make a decision on whether or not to renew. This can be added to one of the support group’s future Wish List depending on the deadline to renew the subscription. 2.2 Financial Report for September 2011 The current financial report is not a true picture of the new budget as FY11/12 has not been adopted as of yet.
