Orauge Public Library & History Center, Orange Rotary Conference Room ' 407 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange, CA 92866 1 . Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3 : lOpm) 1 . 1 . Approval of Meeting Minutes dated November 19, 2012 Motion : Freeman Second : Schlund ' Ayes : Collins, vanVoorst, Monsees 2. Library Director' s Report 2. 1 . Monthly Report 2. 1 . L The Libraiy had two new employees start, one Library Assistant and one Library Page. Library just closed a new recruitment for Librarian II and will begin inteiviews in January. 2. 1 .2. The Library was approached by the Old Towne Preservation Association (OTPA) ' to have their check-in event at the Library next year (Nov 2 & 3`a — which is a Saturday/Sunday), the library is working on this and OTPA said they would make a $ 500 donation to the library far doing this . ' 2. 1 .3 . Volunteer Coordinatar is working on a new handbook for volunteers. 2 . 1 .4. The Budget kicks off January 7�h and is due February 7�h to the City Manager' s office. 21 . 5 . California Connects & Santa Ana College haue united to provide a federally ' funded program that teaches computer skills to the publia They are coming to the ' library early next year and will provide classes at each branch, with a class in Spanish at the El Modena branch. 2 . 1 . 6. The Library has received a second check froin the Foundation for e-Books in the amount of $2,252.70 ; this added to the amount received in August ($4,636) totals $6, 888 .70. 2. 2 . Financial Report for November 2012 — the Library is right on track and under budget. ' 3. Board Reports ' 31 . Report fram Chair Collins — will be meeYing individually with newly elected Mayor Tita Smith, and new council members Alvarez and Murphy in January to get them up to speed on the library. ' 3 .2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Schlund — at the 11 /19 meeting the Foundation informed that they mailed out the postcards advertising their upcoming documentary series they will be showing at the library: January 12 : "First Position," February 9 : "The Island President," and March 9: "Bully. " All of these are ', sponsored by the Joe MacPherson Foundation. The next Foundation meeting will be in January (they are not meeting in December) . 3 . 3 . Report fi�om Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman — the next meeting is their annual meeting on January 14°; this is when they hold their board elections . Chair i Collins stated that the Board should be members of the Friends and asked Peter to provide them with applications — which he did. 3 .4. Reports from Trustees — none at this time. ' 4. Old Business ' 4 . 1 . School Events & worlcing with Library Staff - Assistant Library Director Morales is still working on this and will report an update when she has it. 4 .2. Farniers Market event 12/15 update — Trustee Monsees was not able to attend on ' December 15th; she will attend the one in January ( 19`h) . The Board generally attends these events every-other-month. 43 . Show Your Library Card update — Chair Collins reported that this has started and will end on January 18`h. Each location decides what type of discount they want to offer. Those participating are: Watson' s, Zito ' s, Tiddlywinks Toy Store, and The Metropolitain. 4 .4. Laptops fi•om SCE update — The Library has received the laptops and is working on getting free Open Source software installed. IT will also install Deep Freeze anti-virus so8ware. These units will be available for use at OPL only — the branches are still having bandwidth issues, so until this is resolved the laptops will remain at Main. Chair Freeman suggested we get sponsors to provide the Wi-Fi and suggested we check with Time Warner. Director Moreno will discuss this with the City Manager' s office and IT. 4.5 . Electronic Textbooks update — Ms. Morales is still in discussions with Mr. Warren and is working on some of the legal questions. She will provide an update when she has one. 4.6 . EI Modena Homework Center update — the Library is warking on getting a "lead" for this program, once they have a "lead" onboard that can supervisar the volunteers, then staff can move forward on this. The library has a few good leads they are pursuing. 4. 7 . Volunteer Opportunities update — As previously mentioned, the Volunteer Coordinator is working on a new manual for both staff and volunteers. She is doing a great job . 5. New Business 5 . 1 . Policy updates (Assistant Library Director Morales) — updates were reviewed and approved as a whole with changes as indicated next to each item, with the exception of 51 .4. that will be brought back once the copyright information has been confirmed and the one sentence moved. 5 . 1 . 1 . Local History Collection Development 5 . 1 .2. Local History Loaning of Materials 5 . 13 . Local History Reference Use — change title to read History Center Policy 5 . 1 .4. Local History Reproduction of Materials — move last sentence in lst paragraph under "Copyright" to be the last paragraph in the section above; and confirm what the copyright laws are (how long is it in place?). Motion : The motion is to approve items 5 . 11 through 5 . 1 . 3 as presented (with the title change to 5 . 13) and bring back item 5 . 1 .4 once the copyright information has been confirmed & I the sentence moved.
