Monthly Report 2 . 1 . 1 . Introduction of Library Volunteer Coordinator Ashleigh Anderson Camba. 2 . 1 .2 . Facebook page for the City — the City ' s Facebook page will go live today. The Library will contribute to the City' s Facebook page. It is hoped that the Library will be able to have their own page in the near future. 2 . 1 . 3 . Christmas Holiday Closure — the Library will be closed beginning at 6pm on Saturday, December 22°d and reopening Wednesday, January 2°a 2.2 . Financial Report : October 2012 — The carryovers have been posted; the Library is on targeY. 3 . Board Reports 31 . Report from Chair Collins — nothing to report at this time. 3 .2 . Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Schlund 3 .21 . No report at this Yime — the Foundation is meeting directly after this meeting and Chair Collins would like Vice Chair Schlund to inquire about the donations from the annual gala that took place in April : 1 ) eBook money (out of the approximate $7000 raised, the Library has received $4,636), and 2) the Kline Family donation (of the $25k donated, the Library has received $ 15k) . 3 . 3 . Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman 3 . 3 . 1 . Friends are focusing on the reorganization of their workflow. 3 . 3 . 2 . Internet sales For October: $628 . 85 . 333 . Chair Collins asked what the Friend ' s process was for weeding out books. Friend' s President Peter Wetzel stated that they have an inventory control system that marks the boolcs and after 90 days they are pulled and placed in the ten-cent boolc area; some are pulled to save the for their annual booksale . If they don ' C sell at the booksaie they go to the recycling bin in the parking lot. Chair Collins suggested the books be donated to the jails/prisons, Mr. Wetzel stated that they have participated in this in the past, but the jails have so many restrictions that it is too time consuming to do this . 3 .4. Reports from Trustees 3 . 4 . L Trustee vanVoorst: nothing at this time. 3 .4 .2 . Trustee Monsees : nothing at this time. 4. Old Business 4 . 1 . School Events (open house, back to school, ete.) It was first decided Yhat the board would contact the schools about bringing them information about the Library; but because Library staff already makes these types of visits it was suggested that maybe a board member could assist tbem when they deliver the materials. Ms. Morales will discuss this with the Children ' s & Teen Services Manager and will provide an update at the next meeting. 4.2 . TreaCs in the Streets Chair Collins sEated they had a great time at this event and the location was perfect. She thanked the Board far their hard work and thanlced the Friend ' s for donating money to purchase candy. Tiustee Monsees requested to have more bookmarks for next years ' event (these were the ones from Friends giving a twenty- five cent discount) . 4 . 3 . Fu-mers Market Trustees Schlund & Monsees said they had a great time working this event and Trustee Monsees volunteered to do December 15 `h . Trustee Monsees requested more of the Homework Help flyers (by grade level) . Chair Collins suggested they take the prize wheel next time. 4 . 4 . Show Your Library Card Month Chair Collins confirmed with four vendors to begin this program on Monday, November 26, 2012 : 1 ) Watson ' s, 2) Rocky Mountain Chocolate Faetory, 3 ) Jalapends and 4) Tiddly Winks Toy Store. On a side note, Tiddly Winks would like to partner with the Library on futiu•e events . Library staff will make the flyers, as advertisement in the Library, and fow• larger (possibly 8S x 14) of a blown-up Library card to be placed in each vendor' s window. 4 . 5 . Laptops from SCE The Library should receive them by mid December. Chair Collins asked if the Library was going to utilize these at the Homework Center at El Modena, and if there was a way to send one or two to TafC7 Director Moreno stated that there are issues with the T- 1 lines at both the branches; the lines are saturated. Director Moreno will be meeting witli IT to figure out the best solution to fix this issue. At this point the Library cannot add any type of computer to the branches until this gets resolved. 4 . 6 . Electronic Textbooks from School Districts Ms. Morales, along with Volunteer Coordinator Ashleigh Anderson Camba and Library Tech Services Manager Angela Scherer, met with Glenn Wan-en, V.P . of California Schools Library Association and LMT at McPherson Magnet School, about getting digital textbooks available at the Library. Mr. Warren suggested using Blacl<board as the fotmdation by creating a classroom and populating it with digital textbooks . Ms. Morales will conYinue to worlc on this project. 4. 7 . El Modena Branch Homework Center Ms . Morales reported that this is a challenge unless the Library can get a volunteer to supervise the volunteers. The Library would prefer that this be a retired teacher. Ms . Morales is working on this with help from the new Volunteer Coordinator. It was suggested Libraiy staff create a flyer to advertise this need. Once they have this person in place, the Library can move forward with the Homework Center at El Modena. 4. 8 . Volunteer Opportunities at the Library The Volunteer Coordinator (Ashleigh Anderson Camba) is on her 3`d week at the Library and will be reciuiting inore volunteers in the future. 5. New Business 5 . 1 . 1 . SCLC (Southern California Library Cooperative) — all Orange County Libraries will withdraw from the SCLC system effective July 1 , 2013 and fonning their own group called CLOC (Cooperative Libraries of Orange County) . 6.
