Chapman Avenue, Orange, CA 92866 1 . Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3 : OOpm) 11 . Introduction of new Board Trustee Joyce Monsees 1 . l . l . Trustee Monsees gave a brief description of her background; she is currently in graduate school for Library Science and worlcs at Olive Elementary. 1 .2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated July 16, 2012 Motion : Patti vanVoorst Second : Steve Freeman Ayes : Nancy Collins, Jonell Schlund, Joyce Monsees 2. Library Director's Report 2. L Monthly Report ' 2. 1 . 1 . Directar Moreno gave Trustee Monsees background on the library, including the budget (went from $ 181 ,000 three years ago to $50,000); the newly expanded ' hours, the number of volunteers (over 150 active volunteers), and current ' positions the ]ibrary is recruiting/testing/interviewing (Volunteer Coordinator, ' Library Assistant and Library Page) . 2 . 1 .2. Friend ' s was presented with the library' s wishlist at their 9/10 meeting. 2 . 1 .3 . Library Management Team is having an off-site half-day retreat Thursday, 9/27 to discuss goals and priorities for the upcoming year. 2 . 1 .4. Director Moreno, Assistant Director Morales, and Trustee vanVoorst attended ' Back to School night at El Modena High School on 9/ 12 . They had contact with at least 100 people and 90% of them already had library cards; the event was well- received. ' 2. 1 . 5 . The library is working with OUSD on outreach programs . Last week they sent a Librarian to attend the Native American Education program; they liked her ' presentation so much they invited her back. Director Moreno will be attending OUSD ' s parent group "Program Services for English Learners" on 9/21 to give the parents information on ]ibrary programs for their children. ! 2 . 1 .6 . On 9/19 Director Moreno will be taking a tour of the Cypress Street Barrio School; it was recently restored by Chapman University. 2 . 1 . 7 . The City of Orange is conducting its annuai healthfair on Thursday 9/20 . 2. 1 . 8 . All Orange County libraries have agreed to withdrawal from SCLC (Southern California Library Consortium) beginning July 2013 . A letter will be sent to ' SCLC and the State Library in January to inform of OPL ' s withdrawal. 2. 1 . 9. The Dean of Libraries at Chapman University contacted Director Moreno to arrange a toar of OPL on 9/ 11 for State Librarian Stacey Aldrich who was visiting Chapman U. Trustee Freeman attended the tour as we1L ' 2.2. Financial Report for August 2012 : nothing has changed; the carryovers won't appear until next month. 3. Board Reports 3 . 1 . Report from Chair Collins : no report. 3 .2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Schlund: Trustee Schlund was not able to attend, Director Mareno reported the following: 3 .2. 1 . Foundation gave three checks to the Library: 1 ) $ 15 ,000 Kline Foundation, 2) $701 .60 Don Robinson Memorial, and 3) $4,636 Gala-Raise your Paddle event. Additional money should be coming as the Foundation is still collecting donations made at the Gala event. These current donations will be on the 9/25 Council Agenda/consent calendar. The Foundation will make a check presentation at the 10/9 council meeting; the Robinson widow (Bonnie Robinson) will be present for this . Director Moreno stated that the Kline donation will be used for State & Country books. 3 .2 .2. The Foundation collected $ 10,552 from parking lot sales during the Sh�eet Fair. 3 .23 . Upcoming Foundation event, 10/13 screening of The Wrecking Crew. 3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman 33 . 1 . Friend ' s is having a book sale 10/5 & 6, with a special member' s only sale from 10- 12 on Friday. Books will be sold by the bag: $2 for a plastic bag or $3 for a Friend' s bag. A banner will be going up in the Plaza to advertise this event. 3 . 3 .2. Internet Sales for August : $754. 84. 3 . 3 . 3 . They have 10 new volunteers going through background. They advertised in the Orange City News and the Register. ' 33 .4. Last Fiscal year the library added 9,000 books in book donations from the ' Friends . They indicated that 200,000 donated books are received each year. ' 3 .3 . 5 . One of the items on the Library' s Wishlist is a program called "Wish LisY' that allows the public to go to the library' s website and contribute towards the Wish List items. The cost for this program is approx. $ 1 ,000/yr. ' 3.4. Reports from Trustees ' 3 .4. 1 . Trustee vanVoorst attended the Homegrown (Farmer' s Market) in August and stated about 12 people stopped by the Library table. 3 .4 .2. Trustee vanVoorst stated that the El Modena High event that she attended with Director Moreno and Assistant Director Morales was a huge success and would like to see the Board organize their efforts to attend more of these school events to promote the library. ' 4. Old Business ' 41 . Local Schools Open House Events : Chair Collins suggests that the Board diwy up ' the schools and contact principals to brief them on the Library Board and to find out what upcoming programs or events they could attend to promote the library (book fairs & PTA events). Trustee Monsees suggested the Board contact the PTA as a starting point. Chair Collins thought maybe the Board could attend a general PTA meeting and share a PowerPoint show about the library. Director Moreno stated that she could ' probably get a list of PTA presidents from OUSD; and Lending Services Manager ' Linda Cundiff stated that she has the list of current Principals and the LMTs (Library Media Techs) and would share that with the Board. It was mentioned that the Library (as a resource) is buried on schooi websites, but that library staff is currently working ' to get this changed. Library Manager Cundiff suggested that the library be promoted in ' the morning announcements at the schools. Trustee vanVoarst mentioned a program she works on that puts together backpacks for preschool kids and felt this would be a great venue for the Board to promote the library and the Board agreed. She stated that ' this event takes place the last day of preschool. Chair Collins asked that the Board start working on this and keep their eyes open for events where they can promote the library. 5. New Business 51 . Farmers Market 10/20/12 9am-lpm: Trustee Schlund agreed to work the event. Chair Collins stated Farmer' s Market staff will set up the tent and unload her vehicle. 5.2. EI Modena Homework Center : The Gas Company donated $ 1 ,000 to the Friend's of the Library that will be coming with the wisYilist as a grant. A Librarian wili be going to the first meeting of the Interact Club on 9/19/12 to talk about volunteer opportunities. 5.3. Treats in the Streets 10/25 4-7pm: Chair Collins will purchase candy. She & Trustee Freeman will set up at 3pm but she can' t stay for the whole event. Trustee Monsees said she will work the event and possibly have her sons help pick up . Chair Collins will also get teen volunteers to help . Trustee Freeman reminded that the streets are closed until 9pm so someone should bring handcarts to take things back to the Library. 5.4. Outreach opportunities for Trustees : Chair Collins would like to do the "Show Your Library Card" at local businesses this month. She has the signs to post in businesses. The following said they would check with these businesses : Chair Collins : Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory; Trustee Schlund: 7alapends; Trustee vanVoorst: Poul' s Bakery; Assistant Director Marales : Renata's; Secretary Eriksen: Rutabegorz. Please inform Chair Collins BY SUNDAY (9/23) if your business will participate. Also be sure to list this information in the appropriate media circuits (Facebook, library website, etc.). 5.5. Volunteer Opportunities at the Library (potential listing) : Local History Center needs volunteers and the Local History Librarian is working on this. The library is working with VolunteerMatch.com as well as Interact club and other venues to advertise the need for volunteers. The library is in the process of bringing in a Volunteer Coordinator who they hope to have onboard by end of October if not sooner. 6.
