1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:04pm)

2. Library Director’s Report
2.1. Monthly Report - by Rosanne Miller in Director’s absence
The Library received $10,000 from LSTA through a program called Books4U and is to
be used for the purchase of new print materials in six collection areas: Early
Literacy/Parenting, Workforce Development, Non-English Language/ESL, Reference,
Children’s/Teen, and Popular Fiction. These items must be received by June 30, 2013.
2.2. Financial Report – the Library is on track and within budget.
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Chair Collins
3.1.1. Chair Collins tested the Job Scout website as requested and thinks it could be
more user-friendly. She feels that patrons will need tech help with it, but she
thought that overall it would be beneficial to them. Chair Collins would like to do
more tests on the Job Scout website. Ms. Miller will send Chair Collins a link to
a webinar that will provide instructions on using Job Scout.
3.1.2. Chair Collins was asked to be on a discussion panel at the May 22nd conference
she is attending with Trustees vanVoorst, Freeman, and Library staffer Ashleigh
Anderson-Camba. The Conference is titled: Serving with a Purpose.
3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Schlund
3.2.1. The Gala is less than 2 weeks away. They have been working diligently on the
plans for the big day.
3.2.2. It’s Your Money Workshop – the last one is this week and it’s been very
successful.
3.2.3. Summer Film Festival begins June 22 with James and the Giant Peach.
3.2.4. The Foundation plans to hold a mid-century modern architecture series that will
be conducted by Susan Secoy (Ice House) either summer or fall this year.
3.2.5. The Foundation received money from So Cal Edison for “STEAM for Teens”
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math); they will have five
interactive speakers for this event to take place in the summer.
3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman
3.3.1. The Friends are holding a booksale at Taft on June 22 from 1-4pm on the lawn
area. Sale is $2/bag. They will inform Taft Elementary school about it before they
close for the summer. Chair Collins stated she would notify the school if the
Friend’s don’t have time. Trustee Freeman suggested the Board stop by that day
and maybe bring cookies or a treat for the volunteers to thank them for their time.
Trustee Freeman asked the Friend’s to provide flyers for the Farmer’s Market
event on June 17th so they can promote the booksale.
3.3.2. The Friend’s will be ordering more book bags – they have been a big hit.
3.3.3. The Friend’s online bookstore grossed $1,700 & netted $1,150 in April; thanks to
the sale of the New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians (29 Volume Set) that
sold for $998.
3.4. Reports from Trustees – none.
4. Old Business
4.1. School Events & Working with Library Staff – Trustee vanVoorst apologized that she
missed the 4/25 Palmyra school event, she had an emergency with her dog. The next
event is 5/30 at 5:30pm at Prospect; Chair Collins will attend that event, along with
Library Staffers Monica Barrette and Elizabeth Guttierrez.
4.2. Farmer’s Market - Chair Collins stated that the Farmer’s Market really likes having them
there. She asked if Ms. Miller would promote this on the Facebook page, and asked Ms.
Eriksen to send the schedule to Ms. Miller. The next event is June 15th and Chair Collins
will be hosting that date. Trustee Monsees asked for a flyer that Library staffer Damitri
Boone had at one of the school events – it was about things you can do with your library
card and was on half a sheet of paper. Ms. Eriksen will look into getting these flyers
added to the Farmer’s Market bucket.
4.3. Show Your Library Card – Chair Collins reported that she has spoken with Gary Mead
and he will participate. Vice-chair Schlund stated that Poul’s Bakery would also like to
participate – starting immediately. The Board will work on a list of those who wish to
participate for a whole year and then provide the businesses with the proper advertising,
the Library will also advertise these businesses. So far the Board has come up with:
Zito’s, Watson’s, Orange Candy Company, Tiddlywinks, Chronic Tacos, Poul’s Baker,
Cyrano’s, Green Tomato Grill and The Green Door. It was not decided when this
program will begin.
4.4. Laptops from SCE – Ms. Miller reported that the five laptops will be ready for use by
June 1st. Chair Collins and Vice-chair Schlund stated they would be interested in
purchasing a printer for use with the laptops. Ms. Miller stated they will provide the
specs for the printer so they can purchase what is compatible.
4.5. Electronic Textbooks – The City Attorney does not see any issue with this since it would
be accessed through the college’s Blackboard program; the Library is just waiting for
Glenn from OUSD to get back to them. Trustee Monsees stated she will contact him
personally about this.
5. New Business
5.1. Grant Process – Ms. Miller reported on Yolanda’s behalf. She stated that Director
Moreno is working on the draft and that it will include gifts & sponsorships. Trustee
Freeman stated that they are still in the research process and will need time to get the
draft together. Vice-chair Schlund suggested they check with Newport Beach Public
Library because they have a very active Foundation and might have some insight on this
issue.
5.2. Third of July Event – Chair Collins asked if there was a meeting scheduled yet. Ms.
Eriksen has not received anything at this time. Chair Collins would like both spinning
wheels available for this event; Ms. Eriksen indicated she was in possession of both at
this time. Chair Collins asked if there were any leftover prizes from last year. Ms.
Eriksen will look into this. Chair Collins reported that she still has approx. $250 left
over from what the Friend’s provided last year (for candy & prizes). Trustee Freeman
stated that he will once again be asking the Friend’s to provide funds for the 3rd of July
and Halloween events.
