Monday, October 21, 2013
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:02pm)

2. Library Director’s Report
2.1. Monthly Report (reported by Ms. Harpster)
2.1.1. STEAM for Teens program is going well; attendance is increasing.
2.1.2. The In-N-Out Cover-to-Cover Club and Books with Bite programs are both going
strong with hundreds of readers signed up.
2.1.3. Tween Book & Movie Club off to a good start; they are getting the word out.
2.1.4. Adult Services started their monthly Tuesday Tech Talk.
2.1.5. The Floral program was a huge success; another one has already been scheduled
for December.
2.1.6. The Dress on a Dime program was a huge success.
2.1.7. Elmo & Taft each had a “block party;” both were well attended.
2.1.8. Barnes & Noble fundraiser brought in about $1,200 for the Library.
2.1.9. Director Moreno reported that at tomorrow’s City Council Meeting, the Council
will formally accept and appropriate the Target Grant check for $2,000 & Gala
money of $5,700 from the Library Foundation (the money has already been
received).
2.1.10. Director Moreno reported that the Library submitted a formal application for the
National Medal for Museum & Library Service. They were nominated by Loretta
Sanchez’ office and should know by February 2014 if they are a finalist.
2.2. Financial Report – Director Moreno reported that the Library is on budget.
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Chair Collins
3.1.1. Big Orange Book Festival (BOB) – Chair Collins worked the event on Sunday,
but she said it wasn’t well attended. Trustee Monsees stated she worked Saturday
and that it wasn’t busy either; she felt it was due to lack of marketing/advertising.
3.1.2. Chair Collins asked if the Board wanted to have a booth at the Tree Lighting
Ceremony, they all agreed that it’s not the right venue for the library.
3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Schlund
3.2.1. The Foundation is hosting the Masters of Mid-Twentieth Century Modern
Architecture on 11/23 from 3:30-6pm in the Community Room.
3.2.2. The Foundation received $250 donation for the Homework Center in honor of
Don Robinson. The Foundation would like the Library to inform them what will
be purchased with this money (it has to be related to the Homework Center). The
money has not been given to the library at this time. Director Moreno asked how
to proceed and Vice Chair Schlund suggested she contact Julie Kramer.
3.2.3. The next Foundation Board meeting is on 11/4.
3.2.4. The Winter Documentary Film Series has been set: 1/18 “Stories We Tell,” 2/15
“Searching for Sugarman,” and 3/15 “Fresh.”
3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman
3.3.1. Friends did not meet this month.
3.3.2. Director Moreno said that she heard the Friend’s made $1,600 from the booksale
in September.
3.4. Reports from Trustees
3.4.1. Vice Chair Schlund reported that she attended the Block Party at El Modena on
10/12 and that it was a huge success and the kids really enjoyed the activities. She
commended Jean Ong (Site Supervisor) and the Elmo staff for a job well done.
4. Old Business
4.1. School & Library Events – none at this time.
4.2. Farmer’s Market (10/19-Schlund) - Vice Chair Schlund reported that the event wasn’t
well attended this month, but that they love having the library there. The Library Board
asked that Ms. Eriksen prepare half-sheets of the “Show Your Library Card” that could
easily be handed out at this event. Chair Collins asked if the board wanted to attend the
December’s Farmer’s Market, they all agreed to skip December.
4.3. Show Your Library Card – currently there are 16 businesses participating and it’s going
very well.
5. New Business
5.1. Treats in the Streets (10/24 4-7pm) – Chair Collins stated that she & Trustee Freeman
will set up at 2pm. Trustee Monsees stated that she and her husband Mark can work
5:30-7 and will take down the booth and bring all the stuff back on Friday (because the
Library closes at 6pm on Thursday). Chair Collin’s son Tim will work the booth the
whole time. Community Services stated they will provide a fire extinguisher for the
booth.
