09.16.2013 LBOT MINUTES - APPROVED CITY OF ORANGE LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES Monday, September 16, 2013; 3:00 p.m. 1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:05pm) 1.1. Roll Call Present: Library Staff Present: Nancy Collins, Chair Yolanda Moreno, Library Director Patti vanVoorst, Trustee Julie Eriksen, Recording Secretary Steve Freeman, Trustee Joyce Monsees, Trustee Absent: Jonell Schlund, Vice Chair 1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated August 19, 2013 Motion: Freeman Second: vanVoorst Ayes: Collins, Monsees 2. Library Director’s Report 2.1. Monthly Report 2.1.1. Sons of Italy is presenting a check for $1,000 at the 9/24/13 City Council Meeting. 2.1.2. Barnes & Noble was a huge success. 2.1.3. Saturday is the STEAM for Teens kick off. 2.1.4. The Homework Center at Elmo is bringing in 10-12 students per day. The printer purchased and donated by Chair Collins & Vice Chair Schlund has been installed. The laptops are being used regularly. 2.1.5. Next week a group called Mobil Mind Tutoring will be making a presentation to the Management Team. They are seeking a location to hold their tutoring sessions and are looking at Elmo and Taft for this. The tutoring is free to pre-specified students who attend Jordon Elementary (and one other school). These sessions are provided at no charge to the families, but the room fee still applies. This meeting is to learn more about this organization. 2.1.6. Show Your Library Card is off to a great start with 15 businesses participating. 2.1.7. ELF – Early Learning with Families will be held the first week in November. 2.1.8. The Big Orange Book Festival has been set for Saturday 10/12 (10-6) & Sunday 10/13 (10-3); Trustee Monsees said she could assist on Saturday. Chair Collins stated she could help on Sunday and so did Trustee vanVoorst. Ms. Eriksen to confirm this information and provide to Adult Services Manager Rosanne Miller. 2.1.9. Back in 1999 the library received two benches that were donated by the Salter & Nies Families. These benches were to be placed at the library. With the renovation in 2007 the benches were moved; but they can now be found at Elmo & Taft. Also, because the plaques were placed in concrete, new plaques are being ordered and will be attached to each bench. Councilman Alvarez is informing the families. 2.1.10. The library had an incident in which on more than one occasion either a wallet or money was stolen from a staff member or volunteer (in one case it was caught on tape). Today, the suspect showed up at the library and was recognized so PD was called and they arrested him. The Library Director has discovered that the same person had also stolen from staff/volunteers at the Fullerton Library and so they will be contacted about this latest development. 2.2. Financial Report – The library is in good shape. The City finally closed the books so the carryovers should show up in the next report. 3. Board Reports 3.1. Report from Chair Collins – The printer for Elmo was purchased and is already in operation at the homework center. Chair Collins has been helping to promote “Show Your Library Card” and stated that businesses are very excited about this program. 3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation – Reported by Kim Nichols and Julie Kramer 3.2.1. The Street Fair parking was down this year, they attribute it to the excessive heat. They raised $9,500 which is less than the prior year. 3.2.2. STEAM for Teens starts Saturday and is once a month for 5 months – this program is funded through a grant the Foundation received from SCE. 3.2.3. It’s Your Estate starts 9/18 and runs through 11/6 and will be held at St. Joseph’s Hospital this year. 3.2.4. They are having a film screening on Masters of Mid-Twentieth Century Art on 11/23 in the Community Room. 3.2.5. Their annual documentary film series will take place the 3rd Saturday of January through March 2014. 3.2.6. The Gala is scheduled for May 18th at the Irvine Ranch Educational Center. 3.2.7. Next Foundation Board meeting is 11/18/13. 3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman 3.3.1. The library presented their wishlist to the Friends; it will not be reviewed until their next meeting. 3.3.2. The October Board meeting has been cancelled because Board President Peter Wetzel will be out of the country; the next Board meeting isn’t until 11/12/2013. 3.3.3. The Book Lovers calendar was presented as a possible fundraiser, but the Board didn’t seem to be interested. 3.3.4. The book sale will be held 9/27 & 28; they will be selling books $3/bag or $5/bag with a Friend’s reusable bag. The Rotary room will be used to sell book sets or items that are valued between $1-$5 each. 3.3.5. Internet sales were good last month; they sold 37 books and one audio bible for a profit of $696. 3.4. Reports from Trustees – Trustee vanVoorst reported that she attended the Back to School event at Taft on 9/10/13 and that it went very well. She said that library staff Andrea Roque & Gabriela Escoto did a great job interacting with the parents and students. 4. Old Business 4.1. School & Library Events – Chair Collins is scheduled to assist with the Orange High School event on 9/18 at 6pm. Ms. Eriksen will email her the details. 4.2. Farmer’s Market (10/19 - Schlund) - Vice Chair Schlund is scheduled to work this event, and Chair Collins suggested another Trustee assist with set up. Ms. Eriksen will confirm who will help when the date draws near. 4.3. Show Your Library Card – as previously mentioned, this program is well on its way to a great start, and businesses continue to be added as they turn in the signed agreement. 5. New Business 5.1. Treats in the Streets (10/24 4-7pm) – the mandatory meeting is scheduled for 10/15 at 6pm at the Senior Center. Ms. Eriksen to check with Acting Assistant Library Director Amy Harpster to see if they have prizes for the wheel. Chair Collins stated she will purchase candy, and that she can set up, but that she has to leave by 5:30 pm; she stated that Tim can work the booth. Trustee Freeman stated he can set up too. Trustee Monsees stated she and her husband can work the booth. 6.
