MINUTES
Monday, November 17, 2014; 3:15 p.m.
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:15pm)
1.1. Roll Call
Present: Chair Collins; Trustees: Monsees, Freeman, vanVoorst
Absent: Vice Chair Schlund

2. Library Director’s Report
2.1. Monthly Report
2.1.1. Library Volunteer Coordinator Ashleigh Anderson Camba has returned from maternity leave. She is
planning a week of volunteer appreciation (week of December 8) in which special treats/snacks will be
available for all library volunteers.
2.1.2. The library will be closed November 27 & 28 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The City Council will be voting
on the holiday closure at the 11/25 meeting, if approved, all city offices will close at noon on 12/24/14 and
reopen on Monday, January 5, 2015.
2.1.3. Staff will be meeting with Fullerton next Monday on the One Book One City (Tale of Two Cities in this
case) and will hopefully have a book picked.
2.1.4. The Foundation Games will take place April 18 & 19 next year. The library will have a booth at the event
and the Director invited the Board to attend. Chair Collins stated she will be at the event. Director Moreno
also invited the Library Foundation to assist at the booth.
2.1.5. The library created a Pinterest page and went live last week.
2.1.6. The library did a soft opening for Zinio – an online magazine catalog that has 130 titles available for
download.
2.1.7. The library will soon release OneclickDigital (downloadable audio books).
2.2. Financial Report – library is right on track.
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Chair Collins
3.1.1. Chair Collins attended a dedication event at Chapman University in which local artist and art collector Mark
Hilbert was honored for donating some of his art collection and several million dollars to establish a new art
museum at the university. Chair Collins was able to speak briefly with Mr. Hilbert and he stated that he
would like to partner with the library on something. He said he would email Chair Collins after the New
Year.
3.1.2. Chair Collins also ran into Judy Schroeder at this event and spoke to her about the proposed “Read Around
the Plaza” program and stated that Judy wants to be involved. Ms. Shroeder would like to hold an art class
for the kids at the same time. Director Moreno asked Chair Collins (and Vice Chair Schlund) to come up
with a plan and bring it back in January to the Board.
3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation (reported by Director Moreno in Vice Chair Schlund’s absence)
3.2.1. The library provided a quarterly wishlist to the Foundation at their last meeting.
3.2.2. The next Gala is on March 29, 2015 at Chapman University.
3.2.3. The winter documentary films have been selected: Jan 31: Next Goal Wins; Feb 28: Finding Vivian Maier;
March 28: Fed Up.
3.2.4. The Donald Wexler documentary took place on October 27th with about 30 people in attendance.
3.2.5. It’s Your Money (estate planning workshops) are coming back to the library beginning next spring.
3.2.6. Don Robinson’s family made a donation of $200 to the homework center – the library should receive that
from the foundation in the near future.
3.2.7. STEAM for Teens next event is December 13th with Robotics Engineering.
3.2.8. The Foundation provided funds to purchase a scanner for local history and the library will be placing that
order soon.
3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman
3.3.1. Elections are coming up in January and they have two positions open: vice president and treasurer. Both
incumbents for these positions have been nominated (Judy Long VP and Peter Wetzel Treasurer).
3.3.2. The holiday boutique booksale takes place December 6th. They plan to decorate and play holiday music.
3.3.3. The Friends continue to clean up the basement. They have many copies of books from prolific authors and
they are working on ways to move them (such as special sales, give-a-ways, etc.).
3.3.4. The Friends are presenting a check to the library at the 11/25 council meeting for $34,600 at 6pm.
3.4. Reports from Trustees (none)
4. Old Business
4.1. Post event update: Treats in the Streets (10/30) – The event went well. Trustee vanVoorst had her Kiwanis
volunteers help set up and they were very pleased with the help. They had enough candy and prizes. Chair Collins
requested Ms. Eriksen provide containers/buckets to hold all the different prizes and candy to make it easier for
the kids. They requested more flyers (100 of each were provided: Show Your Library Card & Children’s
calendar).
4.2. Post event update: GRIP Clean Up Day (11/15) – The event was not as big as they thought it would be, but it was
still a great event and the area was cleaned up very nicely. The library booth provided free books and information
on services the library provides.
