06.16.2014 LBOT MINUTES - APPROVED CITY OF ORANGE LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES Monday, June 16, 2014; 3:00 p.m. 1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:05pm) 1.1. Roll Call Present: Chair Collins; Trustees: vanVoorst, Monsees and Freeman Library Staff: Director Moreno, Recording Secretary Eriksen Absent: Vice Chair Schlund 1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated May 19, 2014 Motion: Freeman Second: Monsees Ayes: Collins, vanVoorst 2. Library Director’s Report 2.1. Monthly Report 2.1.1. The City budget was adopted on 6/10/14; the library was able to unfreeze a 19-hr Library Assistant position and they are working to fill that position beginning July 1. The library was also able to add the classification of Volunteer Coordinator – this position is currently filled by Ashleigh Anderson Camba. 2.1.2. Beginning July 1, the City is off furlough and Admin. staff will work every-other-Friday; with this, staff also receives a 3% pay increase. 2.1.3. Ben & Jerry’s made a stop at the library to give out free ice cream for 1 hour on Wednesday 6/11/14. 2.1.4. The library is getting “panic” buttons installed at all branches. This allows OPD to be notified and dispatched immediately in emergency situations. 2.1.5. STEAM for Teens kicks off in the fall with the S.C. Edison grant. 2.1.6. Sons of Italy donated another $1,000 to the library. 2.1.7. Friends of the Library had previously requested to rename the bookstore after Arline Minor and submitted a formal request to the Library Director who forwarded it to the City Manager. The City Council has the final say, but Director Moreno thinks they will approve this and should have an answer by end of the week. 2.1.8. Library purchased a pop-up tent with their logo on it. It should arrive tomorrow, Tuesday 6/17. 2.2. Financial Report – this is the last month of the fiscal year. Staff is purchasing some promotional items. They are within their budget and right on track. 3. Board Reports 3.1. Report from Chair Collins – The publicist to Tawnya Brown’s (Nicole Simpson’s sister) book is a friend of Chair Collins and she is getting her to do a book signing during the library’s Barnes & Noble bookfair on July 9th. She also agreed to speak at the library (she does business & life coaching) and will work with Rosanne Miller for that. 3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Schlund (reported by Director Moreno in Schlund’s absence) – Julie Kramer of the Library Foundation stated that the gala went well and she thinks they cleared about $50,000 with at least $10,000 from Raise your Paddle. The next Foundation meeting is in July and they hope to have the official number then. 3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman 3.3.1. The Friends will be meeting next week. Trustee Freeman introduced new president Mary Galuska who reported on some items: 3.3.1.1. She attended Serving with a Purpose and felt it would have been a great workshop for the Foundation. She did make some great connections and she learned that Mission Viejo Library brings in approximately $4,000/month in Internet sales and that Fullerton brings in $2,000/month; she said that they only bring in an average of $500/month. She said that she was invited to visit Mission Viejo to see how they do things and plans to take them up on the offer. 3.3.1.2. The Booksale at Taft took place Saturday 6/14 and was a huge success. They had fiction books along with eight boxes of children’s books and brought in close to $200. They started at 9:30 and finished around 1:15. She thanked the Board for delivering muffins – it was much appreciated. Trustee Monsees asked Ms. Galuska who she thought was their average customer (book resellers, family, etc.); Ms. Galuska stated it was family (parents with their kids). 3.3.1.3. Next booksale scheduled this Saturday 6/21 at El Modena branch from 10-1. Trustee vanVoorst confirmed she would deliver treats in the morning. 3.3.1.4. Booksales at Main - the big booksale is scheduled for September and they are also planning a holiday boutique sale that will take place in early December in the Rotary Room. 3.3.1.5. Vintage Magazine sale – the Friends will be discussing this at their next meeting. The Library wants to get rid of all the magazines in the basement (Life & National Geographic) the Friends are deciding whether they will be selling them or not. Many of the magazines are in bad condition. The library asked to have their decision by Monday 6/23/14. 3.4. Reports from Trustees – Trustee Freeman asked if the Board received his email on strategic planning; they all stated yes they did. 4. Old Business 4.1. Farmers Market (next event 7/19 with Nancy) – it was decided that the Library Board will no longer participate in this event; they will seek a venue that is more suitable to promoting the library. Chair Collins will inform her FM contact of this decision. 5. New Business 5.1. Third of July event – it was previously decided that Chair Collins and Trustees Monsees and Freeman would work 2-4:30pm and Vice Chair Schlund and Trustee vanVoorst would work 4:30-7pm and that all would return to help take down and bring back to the Library. Trustee Monsees stated that she probably wouldn’t get there until 2:30pm; Chair Collins stated that would be fine. Ms. Galuska said she would like to help with this event and can work 4:30-7pm. She stated that Friends will also provide “Free Book” coupons along with a flyer on the booksales. Chair Collins reported she purchased the candy. Ms. Eriksen reported that prizes have been received and that she will have the two prize wheels ready along with all other items for this event. Chair Collins informed the Board to contact Executive Assistant Julie Vicuna with Community Services to get their passes for the event. 5.2. Barnes & Noble event (July 7-13) – Chair Collins asked Ms. Eriksen to get this event added to the Concerts in the Park announcements and get the vouchers to be handed out. 6.
