Clerk by April 1, 2014.
2.1.2. National Night Out is scheduled for August 5, 2014 from 5:30-8pm at the Target
center. The Library Board of Trustees confirmed they will participate again.
2.1.3. The City Council is holding a special budget meeting on Tuesday 3/25/14.
2.1.4. The library submitted a spring wishlist to the Friends for a total of $44,950;
Friends will be voting on this at their next board meeting. Chair Collins asked for
a copy of the wishlist to be emailed to the library board.
2.1.5. The library submitted a wishlist to the Foundation at their last meeting, they plan
to submit one every quarter.
2.1.6. The Foundation presented a check for $9,848.84 at the 3/11/14 Council meeting.
This includes the local history endowment, the astronomy program, and
replacement laptops. They also received another $12,200 that will go to Council
on 4/8/14 for 2 AWE stations and additional funds to cover the laptops.
2.1.7. Pitch an Idea Grant: The library will be pitching their idea to the State Library on
4/9/14, this is done over the phone and then the State Library will let them know
at that time if they can proceed with the process. The library will be asking for
resources for the GRIP program (Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership) in
which they are partnered with 6 schools in Orange (4 elementary and 2 middle).
They are requesting funds to provide transportation for library tours, books, funds
to produce a bilingual video about the library, and ESL (English as a Second
Language) items to help the parents. They are asking for $20,000. Chair Collins
asked if she could attend the meeting.
2.2. Financial Report – The library is right on track. Director Moreno reported that as of
December they have used 80% of the salary for alternates (these are subs that fill in
when staff is out). She stated that there have been several vacations and sick time used
by staff, but she is keeping a close watch on this account and is confident there is enough
money to get them through the end of the fiscal year (June 30th).
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Chair Collins - Chair Collins reported on the 2014 Spring Workshop she
and Steve Freeman attended at the Huntington Beach Library on March 1. On a side
note, she stated that HB Library had summer reading club T-shirts on sale for $10; she
thought it would be cool if OPL could do this. She assumed the T-shirts were donated.
With regard to the workshop, she stated she really liked it and learned a lot from it. One
of the speakers was from the new San Diego Public Library and she reported that they
opened their library with no debt. The next workshop is scheduled for May, however
because they are focusing on fundraising, Chair Collins didn’t feel this would benefit the
board since they are not involved in fundraising.
3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Schlund
3.2.1. Fresh dining event at Ways & Means was a success.
3.2.2. The Gala is May 18th from 3-7 at Irvine Ranch Educational Center. The Mariachi
Divas will be performing. Cost $100/pp, $175/couple. They are honoring the
Orange Barrio Historical Society and Kris Olsen, VP for campus planning and
operations.
3.2.3. OPLF gave $12,000 for 12 laptops (10 for public 2 for staff), and another $10,000
for 2 AWE computer stations.
3.2.4. Next meeting, Monday 5/12 at 5:30pm
3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Freeman (Trustee Freeman absent)
3.4. Reports from Trustees (none)
4. Old Business
4.1. Farmers Market (update from Joyce on 3/15 event; next event 5/17 with Patti & Jonell) –
Trustee Monsees reported everything went fine, not a lot of kids.
4.2. National Library of Medicine (Outreach & Collaboration Project) - Director Moreno was
able to provide information showing that this project does not meet the mission and
goals of the library. After hearing this, the board agreed with her assessment.
4.3. Strategic Vision for Library Future (long-range goals) – Chair Collins would like the
trustees to think of things they would like to see for the library as long-term vision/goals.
She said that she would like the library to become the “information hub.” She was
looking at Smart Board’s online and found that HP has a “Pocket Whiteboard” that can
turn any flat surface into a whiteboard for $700 (it appears to have an internet interface).
She thinks this would be a great tool for PD, Fire, City Hall, and the Library to share
information.

special book sales in the Courtyard and that the policy will be revised to reflect this.
