MIINUTES
Monday, March 19, 2018; 3:30 p.m.
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:34pm)
1.1. Roll Call
Present: Freeman, Martinez, vanVoorst, Hitchcock, Calvert
Absent: none
1.2. Welcome
Chair Freeman wanted to welcome Trustee Rebecca Martinez to her first meeting as the Vice Chair, and Peggy
L. Calvert for her first meeting as a new Board member. Peggy was appointed by Mayor Tita Smith at the
3/13/18 Council Meeting. Peggy is happy to join the Library Board, and said th at her mother was a librarian, so
she grew up going to the library regularly.
1.3. Presentations – The Board wanted to thank former Chair & Trustee Nancy Collins for her 14 years of service as
a Trustee.
1.4. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated February 26, 2018

2. Library Director’s Report
2.1. Library Updates
2.1.1. Senior Manager Shannon Lane is attending the Public Library Association conference in Philadelphia.
2.1.2. The Foundation held a two-day retreat, which was well received.
2.1.3. The Friends approved the Library’s wish list.
2.1.4. The Council approved funds to get the fountain repaired.
2.1.5. The City’s HR Director Steven Pham is leaving Orange.
2.1.6. Staff member Jean Ong has left the Library; she was the site supervisor of El Modena Branch.
2.1.7. Volunteer Coordinator Ashleigh Anderson Camba has left the Library for another career opportunity.
2.2. Financial Report – the library is right on track.
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Trustee Martinez
3.1.1. The two-day Strategic Plan retreat went very well and was well-attended.
3.1.2. The Gala will be in June.
3.2. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Hitchcock
3.2.1. Friends fundraiser at Da Bianca Trattoria will be on Tuesday 4/17 from 5-9pm
3.2.2. Friend’s coupons redeemed: 63 (57 Friends, 1 new membership, 5 Treats)
3.2.3. Ruby’s fundraiser made $230.17.
3.2.4. The Friends have a Facebook account.
3.2.5. The March 10 book sale made $600.
3.2.6. Memberships brought in $160.
3.2.7. The next book sale will be Saturday 9/15/18.
3.2.8. The Friends will provide a basket to the Foundation for the gala.
3.2.9. Internet sales: $600.
3.3. Report from Chair Freeman
3.3.1. Chair Freeman is excited about the change and growth with all Library support groups.
3.3.2. Vice Chair Martinez along with Chair Freeman and 2 library staff members were trained on how to use
the OUSD portal in order to assist students accessing this tool.
3.3.3. Vice Chair Martinez is in contact with RSCCD who would like to partner with the Library in sharing
information.
3.3.4. Requested Ms. Harpster to send open house dates to the Board so they can assist as needed.
3.4. Reports from Trustees
3.4.1. Trustee Hitchcock stated that she listened in on Alex Figueroa doing a storytime and said he did a terrific
job.
