2. Library Director’s Report
2.1. Monthly Report
2.1.1. Jonell Schlund resigned from the Library Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board
due to extended family commitments. She sent a letter dated January 8, 2015 thanking
the library for the opportunity to serve.
2.1.2. There was discussion on the terms of office for the Library Board of Trustees. According
to Ms. Eriksen’s records, terms for both Chair Collins and Trustee vanVoorst had expired
on 6/30/2014. To date, the Council has not reappointed them, however Director Moreno
stated that they are in the process of doing that. Trustee Freeman’s term expires on
6/30/15 and Trustee Monsees on 8/14/15. The City Clerk’s office stated that the Board
should still continue in their regular duties as a trustee, and that this is just a formality.
2.1.3. The library’s Local History Librarian, Lizeth Ramirez, is being honored with the Glassell
award from the Orange Community Historical Society (OCHS) this Thursday night.
Director Moreno and Ms. Eriksen will be in attendance.
2.1.4. The Orange City Manager has announced he is retiring; the City Council asked him to
stay through the March City Council meeting and he has agreed. Assistant City Manager
Rick Otto will serve as “Acting” City Manager as the City prepares for the recruitment
process.
2.1.5. Staff is still working with Fullerton Library on “Tale of Two Cities” and should have their
book selection for this program by the next board meeting.
2.1.6. Staff is working hard on the FY 15/16 budget – which is due to the City Manager the first
week in February. One of the new things in their budget is in the Capital Improvement
Projects – putting money aside for new self-checks at Main (they are 8 years old) and
security gates; and perhaps self-checks and security gates at the branches.
2.1.7. Director Moreno received the dates for the Foundation Games – they will be held on April
17 & 18 at Fred Kelly Stadium. Director Moreno stated that she is working with Doug
Willits and Susy Cunningham so the library can participate in this event. The library was
told they will have a table and two chairs set up for them, and that they can bring their
own tent if they wish. They were also told that the prize wheel was not needed at this
event. The library is deciding what they want to do for this event (what flyers to provide
and/or activities, if any). Chair Collins suggested the library hold a story time. She also
asked if the library could provide library cards at the event (using the internet with iPads).
Director Moreno replied that there might be an issue getting a mobile app to do this.
Chair Collins stated that she will be at the event at 7:00 a.m. and could help with the
library set up if needed.
2.1.8. The Volunteer Recognition Reception is scheduled for April 11, 2015 from 11:30am-1pm.
2.2. Financial Report – the Library is right on track with 48.4% of the budget spent, and they are
half-way through the fiscal year.
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Chair Collins – Chair Collins came across some great articles while reading the
Voice (a newsletter produced by ALA/United for Libraries): 1) Discover & Go, a nationally
recognized partnership between libraries and museums that offers library cardholders free and
low-cost tickets to world-class museums, theaters, aquariums, zoos and science centers
(www.discoverandgo.org). 2) First Look Book Club offered by Random House and
DearReader.com offers daily excerpts from just-published books
(www.tinyurl.com/FirstLookBookClub); get a first look before committing to a book . 3) A
fundraising idea from Cupertino Library Foundation titled “90 Reasons to Love Your Library” that
allows patrons to share why they love their library - and donating $1 per reason. Chair Collins
will be giving this last one to Julie Kramer with the Foundation.
3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation - reported by Director Moreno
3.2.1. The gala is being held on March 29 at Chapman University – it will be a Beatles Tribute
called “With a Little Help from your Friends” and the cost is $125/pp ($225/couple). The
Foundation will be honoring two groups at the gala: 1) The Irvine Company (for donating
property to the County), and 2) OC Bakery.
3.2.2. Ann McPherson made a $7,500 donation to the Library Foundation.
3.2.3. Richard Walker made his annual $1,000 donation to the Library Foundation; his wife Pat
was a clerk at the library.
3.2.4. Don Robinson’s wife made a $200 donation to the Foundation, which was given to the
library to be used for the Homework Center.
3.2.5. The Foundation provided funds to the library from last year’s gala event “Raise Your
Paddle” to purchase a new scanner for Local History as well as new computer chairs.
3.3. Report from Friends of the Library (FOPL) – reported by Director Moreno
3.3.1. The Friend’s board members were reappointed.
3.3.2. Their next book sale will be at the end of May (they prefer earlier in the year but the
Community Room was already booked). The board discussed whether or not they should
continue with their book sales; some felt it was too much work, and some thought the
boutique sale did well and that maybe they just focus on that type of book sale. The board
also agreed that book sales at the branches was not worth the time and effort. Chair
Collins suggested that the Friend’s invite their members to help with the book sales by
posting something in their newsletter. She said that she would be willing to help with the
book sales.
3.3.3. The Treasurer stated they made $71,000 last year (most of that is from sales in the
bookstore).
3.4. Reports from Trustees - (none)
4. Old Business
4.1. Read Around the Circle – Chair Collins was asked to provide a plan to the Library Director for
this proposed program. Chair Collins stated that she worked on this plan with former Vice Chair
Schlund. They hoped this could take place from mid-March to mid-April with a celebration taking
place during National Library Week (which is mid-April). The plan is to allow the stores in the
“plaza” two days during this month-long period to read to kids at their stores (the dates and the
books would be selected by the stores). She went on to say that at the end of the event the City
Council could read to the kids during the “celebration” that will take place at the library when the
event/program is over. She continued that “passport” cards could be made so the kids complete
for each store they visited that is participating. Chair Collins stated that she & Vice Chair Schlund
came up with 10 vendors that would participate and she would visit these stores to find out if
they will participate (these stores were named: Paris in a Cup, Enchanted Florist, Army/Navy
Store, Chocolate Factory, The Toy Store, Watson’s, Schroeder’s).
Trustee vanVoorst thought that some of the stores would be too small to have kids come inside,
and also questioned allowing the stores to pick their dates/times & books. She also asked about
the age group for the books and how will that would be decided.
Chair Collins said that the logistics have not been figured out yet.
Director Moreno questioned who would be reading the books at the stores? Chair Collins said it
would be the stores decision who would read. Director Moreno expressed some concern about
this. She was also concerned with allowing the stores to pick their own date/time. She stated that
it shouldn’t be up to the stores to make these decisions, and that the library would have to make
the guidelines for this event.
Trustee Monsees asked what the draw would be to get the kids to go to the stores. She also
suggested doing a progressive story at Christmas time; selecting one book in which parts of it
are read by each store participating – all done within one day. Everyone liked this idea as well.
Director Moreno stated she would like to bring this all back to her management team to discuss
further and get their feedback.
4.2. Technology Grants for Libraries (Board to provide feedback)
The trustees discussed some of the grants that were on the list provided by Chair Collins but
established that they were not geared towards the library.
Director Moreno stated that researching grants takes a lot of time and unfortunately at this time
she cannot devote a staff member to do this. Chair Collins suggested the Trustees research the
grants for the library and provide those that OPL could best benefit from.
Trustee vanVoorst asked Director Moreno to forward any articles or newsletters that she
receives relating to grant opportunities so they may research them.
