A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE COMMEMORATING THE ONE
HUNDRED TWENTY YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF
CITYHOOD. I
WHEREAS, the City of Orange was founded in 1871 by A.B. Chapman and
Andrew Glassell, and originally called Richland until 1873 when the first post office
opened and the township was re-named Orange, and was incorporated into a city on
April 6, 1888;
and WHEREAS, on April 6, 2008, the City of Orange celebrated the
120th anniversary of its incorporation as a city in the State of California;
and WHEREAS, the City of Orange, as the sixth largest city in the County of
Orange with a population of 138,640, still has vivid memories of its earlier years as a very
small town with a charming downtown plaza surrounded by citrus groves and packing
houses;with these memories and others shared, collected, and preserved at the Orange
Public Library and History Center;
and WHEREAS, the City of Orange has developed from a small town
where agriculture once flourished into a diverse city with a full spectrum of business
and commerce, and is home to some of the most well respected educational and
medical facilities throughout Southern California. Orange continues to carry on and prosper
with the spirit forged by the founders of the community;
and WHEREAS, as the City of Orange is proud of its rich 120-year history;
it also looks ahead to a future filled with the promise of opportunity, hope, and prosperity
for all who call this dynamic
community home.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of the
City of Orange celebrates and commemorates the one hundred twentieth anniversary
of our City's incorporation. We applaud the citizens ofOrange - past and present - for the
outstanding contributions they have made to the history of our city, the State of
California and the nation.
