The tree reportedly originated in Australia and was brought to America by the early settlers. Moreton Bay
Fig trees are nearly extinct, and when they remain, it is very rare. The Native Daughters of the
Goldenwest have dedicated a landmark plaque near the tree to honor Henri F. Gardner, a pioneer who planted
the tree here on March 6, 1875. The land on which the church, the rectory and the school stand was
originally owned by the Gardner Family.
