Moreton Bay Fig trees are nearly extinct, and when they remain, it is very rare. The Native Daughters of the Goldenwest have dedicated a landmark plaque near the tree to honor Henri F. Gardner, a pioneer who planted the tree here on March 6, 1875. The land on which the church, the rectory and the school stand was originally owned by the Gardner Family.
