07-15-2019 Library Board of Trustees MinutesORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVED 08/19/2019 MINUTES Monday, July 15, 2019; 3:30 p.m. 1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:32pm) 1.1. Roll Call Present: Steve Freeman, Rebecca Martinez, Marva Hitchcock, Peggy Calvert Absent: Patti vanVoorst 1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated June 17, 2019 Motion: remove item 5.1.3. Calvert Second: Martinez Ayes: Freeman, Martinez, Hitchcock, Calvert 2. Friends of the Orange Public Library (Christine Huard-Spencer) 2.1. The Friends changed their Board meeting start time to 2:30pm. 2.2. Book sales were down for the month of June. 2.3. Free book coupons redeemed 600: 86 regular, 5 membership, 4 Halloween, 1 Concerts in the Park, 504 Summer Reading Club. 2.4. Avila’s fundraiser brought in $120. 2.5. Friend’s 60th Jubilee will take place Saturday October 12, 2019 at the Library. Ms. Huard- Spencer will ask the Board to coordinate the details with the Library Director. 2.6. Children’s book sale in the Courtyard earned $190. 2.7. Board member Sue Huber is working on a new brochure to explain who the Friends and what they do. 2.8. Book donations/recycling is still going strong. 3. Library Director’s Report 3.1. Updates 3.1.1. Summer Reading Club is going so well with over 400 more participants this year. 3.1.2. Taft and El Modena Branches are now supervised by Librarian II’s. Director Curtis thanked staff member Melody Sawyer for stepping up to fill the role until the new supervisor was hired and trained. 3.1.3. The Library was awarded a Crisis Collection Grant from the State Library for $8,000. Adult & Children’s Services will be sharing the funds to add items to our collection. 3.1.4. The Homework Center changes are coming along very well. 3.1.5. The Library is testing a new internet filter on the public internet access side. The filtering will also include wireless connectivity, which was not covered previously. 3.1.6. Third of July was a success, Grijalva Park seemed to be a good fit for this year’s location. 3.1.7. Librarian II and III candidates are still in the background process. 3.2. Financial Report – the Library is right on track with fiscal year end. 4. Board Reports 4.1. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison 4.1.1. Director Curtis reported that the Foundation was very happy with having the Gala at the Library (as were the party attendees). The event netted $50,000. 4.1.2. And Attendee at the “It’s Your Estate” Foundation program donated $5,000 to them. 4.2. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison (Update provided in Item 2 above) 4.3. Report from Chair Freeman (none) 4.4. Reports from Trustees 4.4.1. Martinez is working to get information on homeschooling groups in Orange. 4.4.2. Calvert expressed that if the Library will be purchasing more ukuleles that she would like to offer her assistance in ukulele selection and that she can get a good price from a local vendor. 4.4.3. Hitchcock stated that the Pop-Up Library is going so well. Martinez stated that the Pop- Up staff is doing an excellent job and commended them on their great efforts. Library Board Meeting 7/15/19 Page 2 5. Old Business 5.1. Show Your Library Card & Save Update 5.1.1. A survey is going out to vendors in the program. 5.2. Third of July recap 5.2.1. The new location made it feel like fewer people were in attendance because it was so spread out. 5.2.2. The EZ-UP is missing a few screws that will need replaced before the next use. 5.2.3. Martinez stated that they need to provide training to the volunteers prior to them working the booth. 5.2.4. Martinez would like to use funds to purchase a second slightly smaller plinko game. Trustee Hitchcock stated she will ask Friends for funds at their next meeting. 6. New Business 6.1. National Night Out (8/6/19 at Stadium Promenade 5:30-8:00pm) 6.1.1. New location. 6.1.2. Board will set up around 4:30. 6.1.3. No Pop-Up at this event. 6.2.
