SUBJECT Proposed removal of a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Lewis Street and Dawn Avenue. 2. SUMMARY With Lewis Street scheduled to be repaved this fall, city staff has identified an opportunity to remove a crosswalk that is very lightly used. 3. RECOMMENDED ACTION Approve the request. 4. FISCAL IMPACT None. 5. STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS Goal 1: Provide for a safe community b. Provide and maintain infrastructure necessary to ensure the safety of the public. 6. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND Street repaving projects represent opportunities for modifying roadway pavement markings to better reflect current community needs and travel behavior. Currently, there is a marked and uncontrolled crosswalk going across Lewis Street at Dawn Avenue that is lightly used, and Lewis Street will be repaved this October as part of the Annual Pavement Maintenance Project. A pedestrian count indicated only eight pedestrians crossing the street at the subject location during the peak period. In light of the above, staff felt that it would be prudent not to replace the marked crosswalk upon repaving the street. In accordance with California Vehicle Code Section 21950.5, a notice of the proposed removal was posted at the crosswalk for no less than 30 days to give the public a chance ITEM 1 9/11/2019 to provide input. Staff has not received any objection to the proposed removal of the marked crosswalk. It is staff's recommendation that the Traffic Commission approve the removal of the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Lewis Street and Dawn Avenue. 7.
