REVIEW: City Manag inance �� 1 . SUBJECT Authorize purchase of safety gear and associated equipment from Allstar Fire Equipment for Fiscal Year 2019-2020. 2. SUMMARY � The Fire Department purchases safety gear and equipment from Allstar Fire Equipment every year. Safety gear and associated equipment is routinely purchased from a small group of highly specialized vendors to replace expired or damaged equipment. 3. RECOMMENDED ACTION Approve the purchase of firefighter turnout safety gear and equipment from Allstar Fire Equipment in an amount not to exceed $50,000 for Fiscal Year 2019-2020. 4. FISCAL IMPACT The total expenditure for this purchase is $50,000 and will be funded through General Fund (100). . 5. STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS Goal 1: Provide for a safe community b. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND The Fire Department must purchase from a select group of vendors due to product availability, manufacturing, distribution and expertise. Allstar Fire Equipment (Allstar) provides the current and approved specifications for firefighter helmets, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) parts, firefighting gloves, wildland brush jackets and wildland firefighting boots. Allstar is the only direct distributor for Scott Health and Safety, which manufactures the Fire Department's current SCBA. Current replacement parts for SCBA are ordered directly through Allstar which is also the only direct distributor for Phenix ITEM 3•�3 � � 06/11/2019 Helmets, the Fire Department's current structure fire helmet specification, and Elkhart Brass who manufacturers firefighting nozzles and hose couplings. Firefighter safety gear and equipment is ordered based on operational needs and national safety standards. The majority of equipment ordered by the Fire Department has a safety and life expectancy that must be adhered to in order to provide the highest possible level of protection to Fire Department personnel. Safety equipment is often custom made to order based on individual sizing and department specifications. When safety equipment is exposed to hazardous chemicals or other fluids, it must be either properly decontaminated after use or potentially replaced. In order to maintain departmental specifications and safety standards, direct distribution vendors are necessary for Fire Department operations. 7. ATTACHMENTS None. � ITEM 2 � 06/11/2019 �
