1 . SUBJECT
Authorize purchase of inedical supplies from Life-Assist, Inc.
2. SUMMARY
The Fire Department purchases medical supplies from several vendors including Life-
Assist, Inc. In April 2017, Life-Assist, Inc. was awarded a contract with Riverside County
valid from April 2017 through March 31, 2022. As part of this contract, Life Assist has
extended cooperative pricing to the City of Orange.
3. RECOMMENDED ACTION
Approve the purchase of inedical supplies and medications from Life-Assist, Inc. in an
amount not to exceed $237,000 for Fiscal Year 2019-2020.
4. FISCAL IMPACT
The total expenditure for this purchase is $237,000 and will be funded through:
EMT Transport Fund (125) $143,500
General Fund (100) 93,500
Total: $237,000
5. STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS
Goal 1: Provide for a safe community
b. Provide staffing and resources to deliver services that ensure public safety.
6. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND
Over the last several years, Life-Assist, Inc. (Life-Assist) has offered cooperative
purchasing to Orange City Fire Department. This opportunity delivers the most
competitive pricing available for medical supplies and medications. Life Assist provides
the greatest selection of inedical products and superior customer service. The Fire
Department is typically able to piggyback onto larger contracts with other public safety

agencies. In this case, Life-Assist has extended the contract pricing that was negotiated
with Riverside County to the City of Orange. '
The Fire Department is recommending that the City Council continue to approve the
purchase of inedical supplies and medications from Life-Assist. Approximately $285,000
is spent annually on medical supplies through four different vendors. Generally, our
medical supply costs are reimbursed through patient billings. Based on routine pricing
comparisons performed by Fire Department personnel, Life Assist continues to offer the
most competitive costs through their extended cooperative purchasing agreement
opportunities. The cooperative purchasing provided through the Riverside County
contract ensures lower prices throughout the contract period ending on March 31, 2022.
7. ATTACHMENT
• Letter from Life-Assist extending Riverside County pricing to the City of Orange
dated May 4, 2017.
