7. DISCUSSION and BACKGROUND
The Orange Police Department (Department) acquired a Compellent storage area network (SAN)
in January of 2011, which was connected to the Civic Center SAN to provide a real -time disaster
recovery solution. The Department has realized many benefits by implementing the Compellent
SAN including:
• Increased storage capacity
• Increased storage performance
• Reduced administration
• Continuous data availability
• Virtualized data center (30 physical servers reduced to 6)
In conjunction with the 2015 Civic Center SAN upgrade, the Department expanded the storage
system, but it is now necessary to upgrade the storage platform itself. Most of the Compellent
solution at the Department is reaching its end -of -life in terms of continued vendor support and
must be replaced. All of the Department's critical data is stored on the SAN including: records
management, computer -aided dispatch, e-mail, Laserfiche, shared files, etc. The Department has
been very satisfied with both Compellent as a storage solution and Sidepath as a trusted partner
for implementation and support.
Staff is recommending an upgrade of the Compellent SAN to increase performance, capacity, and
provide continued operation of the Department's storage platform. The Department's storage
capacity will increase from 82 terabytes to 115 terabytes. Sidepath is the registered partner with
Compellent; as such, they receive preferred pricing from Dell /EMC and have also provided
NASPO pricing ( NASPO# MNWNC -108 I State Addendum #7- 15 -70 -34 -003 1 Authorized
Reseller Code 98AHB). Sidepath has continually demonstrated value to the City in both product
purchases as well as professional services.
The cost of the Police Department SAN replacement project is $270,039, which is a budgeted
Capital Information Technology project.
