MINUTES
Monday, December 19, 2016; 3:30 p.m.
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:30pm)
1.1. Roll Call
Present: Collins, Freeman, vanVoorst, Hitchcock, Martinez
Absent: none
1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated October 17, 2016

2. Library Director’s Report
2.1. Monthly Report
2.1.1 The Library Director is requesting for part-time security service. The trial security service went
very well with a positive reaction from the staff and patrons. This is contingent on the City
Manager’s approval.
2.1.2 The Library continues to process vacant, and soon-to-be vacant, positions. Five staff members are
retiring, two recently vacated their position and the other three leave with the holiday closure .
2.1.3 Staff is working on their budget for next fiscal year.
2.2. Financial Report - the Library is on track.
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Chair Collins
3.1.1 Chair Collins said she asked Sargent Jennifer Amat to get in touch with the Library Director
regarding the Library’s role in emergencies.
3.1.2 Chair Collins was asked if the Library had a homeless problem. Director Curtis shared concerns
and issues.
3.1.3 Field of Valor was a huge success. Chair Collins would like to get the Library Board involved.
3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison (Chair Collins)
3.2.1 The Board met last month and started conversations for the 2017 Gala.
3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison (Marva Hitchcock)
3.3.1 Sue Glover was appointed the Corresponding Secretary/Publicity Chair.
3.3.2 A committee was formed to review and update the Bylaws.
3.3.3 Free Book Coupons: 85 coupons were collected this month: three from Third of July, 49 from
Friends Logo, 32 from Treats in the Streets, and 1 from new membership.
3.3.4 The Da Bianca fundraiser brought in $346.80. The owner would like to hold another one.
3.3.5 Next fundraiser will be at Ruby’s on Wednesday, January 25 from 7am-9pm (includes take-out).
3.3.6 The Friends voted to change from an “association” to a “corporation.”
3.3.7 The Annual Holiday boutique was held 12/10; this is one week later than usual and attendance was
down.
3.3.8 Nominations for VP: Christine Huard-Spencer; Secretary: Mary Galuska.
3.4. Reports from Trustees
3.4.1 Trustee Hitchcock commented on how much fun it is having Library Assistant Jack [Tsuruda]
participate in the Ukulele Soup program. Jack plays the ukulele with the group and even attends on
his time if he’s not working the event. They thoroughly enjoy having him.
3.4.2 Trustee Martinez reported that her book club raised $180 for the Orange County Family Justice
Center “adopt a family” and with the money they purchase 400 books from the Friends of the
Library. Sixty-one families left with a book stamped “Orange Public Library” that day!
4. Old Business
4.1. Treats in the Streets recap
4.1.1 Everything went smoothly, the location is perfect, and they had lots of help from the Kiwanis kids.
Chair Collins suggested they be provided with a list of volunteer names and shifts.

4.2. Literacy Program update
4.2.1 The Literacy Coordinator has started, Jerry Edwards is highly qualified and is working with staff to
get this program started. He will also assist in selecting a permanent coordinator.
5. New Business
5.1 Policy Review/Approval: Rules of Conduct

5.2 Board Goals & Vision for 2017
5.2.1 Chair Collins would like to work with the Library Director on what goals he may have for the
Board.
5.2.2 Director Curtis stated that beginning January, each Division Manager will be making a report
directly to them at a Board Meeting.
5.3 American Library Association membership renewal
