MINUTES
Monday, September 19, 2016; 3:30 p.m.
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:33pm)
1.1. Roll Call

2. Library Director’s Report
2.1. Monthly Report
2.1.1 The Elks Lodge held their Promise to Read program at the Library this past Sunday with
over 400 in attendance, 200 backpacks were given out, and 50 new library cards issued.
2.1.2 Craig Johnson will be at the Library on 9/23; and possibly Michael Connelly in
November.
2.1.3 Digital Saturday is this week where patrons can learn how to use the Library’s electronic
resources as well as their own personal devices.
2.1.4 The Library’s surveillance system has been upgraded and is working properly. The
Library will be getting more upgrades in conjunction with the City’s system.
2.1.5 The Library received two silent alarm buttons that will be installed at the Welcome Desk
and the Friend’s bookstore.
2.1.6 The Library has partnered with SCORE for monthly programs. They held their first
session in August with 60 people in attendance. There is no meeting in September.
2.1.7 John Ferry has been promoted to Librarian II in Children’s. Keisha Loidolt has been
promoted to Librarian I in Children’s. The Library will open a recruitment for a full-time
Library Assistant position. Interviews are set up this week for a full-time Clerk position.
2.2. Financial Report - the budget is right on track.
3. Board Reports
3.1. Report from Chair Collins – Chair Collins shared that Orange native, J.M.Whitaker wrote and
illustrated a children’s book called ABC for Astronauts.
3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison (Nancy Collins)
3.2.1 Street Fair parking brought in about $10,500.
3.2.2 The STEAM for Teens 3D Printer event on 9/10 had 19 teens in attendance.
3.2.3 Next year’s Gala will be held on 4/23/17 honoring Nora Jacob and the Schroeder’s.
3.2.4 It’s Your Estate has been going strong, last meeting had 55 in attendance.
3.2.5 The Foundation presented a check at the 9/13 Council Meeting for $14,500 from Raise
Your Paddle event at the Gala.
3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison (Marva Hitchcock)
3.3.1 The Friend’s will start keeping track monthly on how many free book coupons are
redeemed, and from which event they were provided. They currently had 645 coupons
claimed, with the following noted: 1 from 3rd of July, 2-Halloween, 8-Friends
membership, 19-superhero program, 15-National Library Week, 84-National Library
Card sign up month from 2015 and another 16 from this year. It is assumed that all others
would be from new library card sign ups (every new library card issued gets a free book
coupon).
3.3.2 Friends of the Library week is 10/16-22.

3.3.3 Friends magnets were provided for use as prizes.
3.3.4 Friends is holding a fundraiser at Da Bianca Trattoria on 10/18/16. Their last fundraiser
at Wise Guys brought in $82.
3.3.5 Internet sales from August came to $778.
3.3.6 Volunteer hours for August came to 745.
3.3.7 Volunteer Barbara Geach retired from the Friends.
3.4. Reports from Trustees – none.
4. Old Business
4.1. Literacy program update – The Library should find out next week if they are receiving the grant.
Director Curtis reported that he received an email from the coordinator at the State Library
asking if the Library were to receive more funding would they be able to hire a part time
assistant. Director Curtis was encouraged by this question.
5. New Business
5.1. Treats in the Streets October 27, 2016 4-7pm
4.1.1 The Board will schedule their shifts at the next meeting. Trustee vanVoorst will provide a
few volunteers.
4.1.2 Chair Collins will purchase candy. Prizes are being ordered.
4.1.3 Chair Collins requested caution tape to put on the ground.
5.2. Friends of the Library Appreciation Week 10/16-22
5.2.1 Chair Collins would like the Board to do something for the Friends.
5.2.2 Vice Chair Freeman suggested a proclamation be requested for the 10/13 Council
Meeting.
5.2.3 The Volunteer Coordinator, Ashleigh Anderson Camba, usually plans something for that
week to thank the Friends for their support. It was suggested the Board work with
Ashleigh to coordinate something with her.
5.2.4 Director Curtis suggested contacting the Friends President to see if she has any ideas of
what they would like for a celebration.
