08.15.2016 Library Board of Trustees Minutes - ApprovedORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES Monday, August 15, 2016; 3:30 p.m. 1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:33pm) 1.1. Roll Call Present: Collins, vanVoorst, Hitchcock, Martinez Absent: Freeman 1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated July 18, 2016 Motion: Martinez Second: vanVoorst Ayes: Collins, vanVoorst, Hitchcock, Martinez 2. Library Director’s Report 2.1. Monthly Report 2.1.1 The Library is partnering with SCORE (Southern California Organization of Retired Executives) to host monthly workshops with topics geared towards small business entrepreneurs. 2.1.2 The Library is partnering with Book Carnival to host author Sandra Brown on Sunday, 8/21 at 3pm. 2.1.3 Summer Reading Club was a success with 2,650 participants. Experienced higher completion rate. 2.1.4 The Library is obtaining two additional silent alarm buttons, one for the Welcome Desk and one for Friends Bookstore. 2.1.5 The Library has promoted Andrea Roque to Librarian III. Two people are in background check for Library Page. Staff is being interviewed for a Librarian II position, with this promotion it will open up a Librarian I position that will open for promotion. 2.1.6 The Library has assembled a safety committee that will work with PD to do a Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) evaluation. 2.1.7 The Library is starting another contest with staff and the Board to bring in more businesses for the Show Your Library Card & Save program. 2.1.8 The Library is now a member of ProLiteracy.org which provides technical assistance, and access to exclusive resources. 2.2. Financial Report – this is the first month of the new fiscal year. The budget is right on track. 3. Board Reports 3.1. Report from Chair Collins 3.1.1 Chair Collins asked if staff could look at the sliding doors at the north entrance, she said it’s very loud and sound like it’s on its last leg. 3.1.2 Chair Collins was contacted by the Community Foundation about partnering with the Library to hold an Art Fair next year. 3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison – no meeting this month. 3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison 3.3.1 The next book sale is 9/16 & 17. 3.3.2 The Bookstore will not be open on Friday 9/2 due to the Street Fair. 3.3.3 The Friends Board is researching whether they will continue with International sales. 3.4. Reports from Trustees 3.4.1 Trustee Martinez stated that her grandkids love the story times at the Library and wanted to pass on her gratitude to staff. Library Board of Trustees Meeting 8/15/2016 Page 2 of 2 4. Old Business 4.1. National Night Out recap 4.1.1 The Board asked for more Friends’ Free Book Coupons added to the prize wheel. They also wanted to know if the Friends could keep track of how many of the coupons make it back to them. 4.1.2 Chair Collins stated it was much better getting there at 1:00 pm for set up. She suggested they continue with this set up time in the future. 4.1.3 Chair Collins would like to ask PD if they could get an end spot next year. 4.2. Literacy Program update 4.2.1 The Grant is due this Friday 8/19. Applicants will know in September if they are awarded the grant. 4.3. Read with a Police Officer – The Library is looking at incorporating children’s votes by reading California Young Readers Medal book titles. The Children’s Manager is working out the details. 5.
