09.18.2017 Library Board of Trustees Minutes - ApprovedORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES Monday, September 18, 2017; 3:30 p.m. 1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance 1.1. Roll Call Present: Freeman, Collins, vanVoorst, Martinez, Hitchcock Absent: none 1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated August 21, 2017 Motion: Collins Second: Martinez Abstain: none Ayes: Freeman, Collins, vanVoorst, Martinez, Hitchcock 2. Library Director’s Report 2.1. Technology & Tech Services Presentation TS Manager Angela Scherer along with two staff members, David Price and Lara Paglinawan made a department presentation to the Library Board. 2.2. Library Updates 2.2.1 The new Children’s & Teen Services Manager Shannon Lane will start on 9/25. 2.2.2 Twenty-seven people showed up for literacy tutor training, there are currently 12 learners on the waiting list to be tutored. 2.2.3 Expenditure Summary – Library is right on track. 3. Board Reports 3.1. Report from Chair Freeman –Trustee Martinez was named the Foundation liaison. 3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison – reported by Trustee Martinez 3.2.1 The Foundation raised $8,975 from parking during street fair. 3.2.2 Seed Library has given out 8,000 packets since inception. 3.2.3 It’s Your Estate presentations are going well. 3.2.4 STEAM for Teens received a $500 grant from Staples. 3.2.5 The Foundation has partnered with National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWrMo) which takes place in October. This program provides a place for writers to write and get help from their peers. 3.2.6 Newsletter will go out in December. 3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison – reported by Trustee Hitchcock 3.3.1 Da Bianca fundraiser make $442. The next 2 fundraisers are 10/4 at Bruxie’s, and 10/24 at California Pizza Kitchen 3.3.2 Adding a new position to their Board titled “Outreach.” 3.3.3 Basement organizing nearing completion. 3.3.4 Internet sales totaled $1,600. 3.3.5 Friends free book coupons redeemed: 120 - Friends, 3 - Third of July. 3.4. Reports from Trustees 3.4.1 Trustee Martinez reported that while she was in Tustin she saw a restaurant advertise that they give 1% of their sales to five different groups (including Tustin Foundation, library and school). 3.4.2 Trustee vanVoorst reported that she went to Panorama’s back to school night. Library Board of Trustees Meeting 9/18/17 Page 2 4. Old Business 4.1. Treats in the Streets update (event Thursday 10/26) The event is from 4-7pm. The Board will arrange schedules to set up and take down. They will finalize details at the October meeting. 5. New Business 5.1. Back to School Nights – dates provided Vice Chair Collins asked for a school contact name when going to Back to School Nights. She stated that they didn’t have the appropriate materials for the event such as cloudLibrary, and homework helpers per grade level. Chair Freeman asked the Board to provide feedback to Amy after they attend back to school to help improve what is needed to make these events successful for the library. 5.2. Partnerships with OUSD & SCC 5.2.1 Assistant Director Amy Harpster reported that she is working closely with OUSD. The School Librarians will hold two meeting at OPL&HC in October. Back to School letters were emailed to school principals and librarians encouraging them to contact OPL for tours, etc. The Library has also reached out to alternative education (homeschoolers). Chair Freeman asked V.C. Collins if she had a list of homeschool groups that she share that with the Board so they can reach out to them. 5.2.2 Assistant Director Amy Harpster reported that staff is working with SCC to see about having an exhibit at their library, and in turn they will have one here. 5.2.3 Chair Freeman reported that Unity Middle College High School is a new charter school in Orange and the Board was invited to attend their ribbon cutting this Friday. They currently have 80 students enrolled and the number is going up. They would like to partner with Library in any way they can. 6. Library Happenings (all take place at OPL unless otherwise noted) 9/18 Booktalk! 7pm 9/19 Tech Talk Tuesday, 7pm 9/20 Teen Angst Movie Night: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (PG13), 6pm 9/23 Ukulele Soup, 11am 9/23 Mad Hatter Tea Party, 2pm 9/25 Monday Mysteries: Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart, 2pm 9/25 SCORE – help for small business owners, 6pm 9/27 Teen Game Day, 4:30-6pm 9/30 Special Effects Makeup Demonstration, 10a-12:30p 10/7 SAT/ACT Practice Test, 9a-1p 10/9 Bad Art, 6:30pm 7.
