01.17.2017 Library Board of Trustees Minutes - ApprovedORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES Monday, January 16, 2017; 3:30 p.m. 1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:35 pm) 1.1. Roll Call Present: Collins, Freeman, Hitchcock, Martinez Absent: vanVoorst 1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated December 19, 2016 Motion: Martinez Second: Freeman Ayes: Collins, Freeman, Hitchcock, Martinez 2. Library Director’s Report 2.1. Monthly Report 2.1.1 Security guard service is returning. 2.1.2 The Library was open on Christmas Eve from 10-2 and had 450 patrons visit. 2.1.3 The FY 17/18 budget is under way. 2.1.4 The sorter is getting old, staff is looking into replacing it. 2.1.5 Bike racks are being added to the library. 2.2. Financial Report – the Library is right on track. 3. Board Reports 3.1. Report from Chair Collins – none 3.2. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison Chair Collins 3.2.1 The Gala is scheduled for 4/23/17 at Santiago Vineyard Estate; the Library Board will provide a basket for the auction. Chair Collins would also like the Board to help bring in more people to attend the Gala. 3.2.2 The National Charity League has been helping with the Seed Library. 3.2.3 The Foundation has received $41,000 in donations so far this year. 3.2.4 The Foundation is working with staff to provide the PTA Council with a tour of the Library on February 1 st. 3.3. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison Trustee Hitchcock 3.3.1 The Friends ratified updates to their Bylaws. 3.3.2 Christine Huard-Spencer was elected as Vice President and Mary Galuska will continue as Secretary. 3.3.3 The Friends will help purchase items for the Library’s 10 year anniversary event. 3.3.4 Sales for 2016 totaled $65,331. 3.3.5 Friend’s has 61 active volunteers. 3.3.6 Friends Internet sales made $260 during the holiday closure. 3.3.7 37 free book coupons were redeemed (34 from the bookstore, 2 from Halloween, and 1 from membership). 3.3.8 Friends will be doing an audit at the end of January. 3.3.9 The Spring book sale is March 10 & 11. 3.3.10 Friends is holding a fundraiser at Ruby’s on January 25. 3.4. Reports from Trustees - none 4. Old Business 4.1. Literacy Program update 4.1.1 The Adult Literacy Coordinator Jerry Edwards shared information on the status of the Literacy Program. 4.1.2 Tutor training will begin in March; so far 9 volunteers have signed up to tutor. 4.1.3 Mr. Edwards asked the Board for recommendations on where they thought would be a good place to recruit for volunteers as well as students. 4.2. Board Goals & Vision 4.2.1 Chair Collins would like the Board to continue to promote Adult Literacy. 4.2.2. Vice Chair Freeman stated (per goals previous set) the Board should continue working closely with the Orange Unified School District. 4.2.3 Chair Collins would like to continue working towards making the Library an information center for emergencies. 5. New Business 5.1. Presentation from Adult & Branch Services Manager Kurt Keesling and Librarian Lizeth Ramirez Mr. Keesling and Ms. Ramirez gave a presentation on services provided by Adult & Branch Services, including: collection, technology, electronic services, programs/outreach, and local history services.
