Monday, December 17, 2018; 3:30 p.m.
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:31pm)
1.1. Roll Call
Present: Steve Freeman, Rebecca Martinez, Marva Hitchcock, Patti vanVoorst, Peggy Calvert
Note: Calvert excused herself at 4:35 as she had an engagement to attend

2. Presentations
2.1. Tech & Lending Services
Tech Services Manager Angela Scherer and Lending Services Manager Deniss Sok explained
the process for getting a new book sorter for the Library. The new sorter is expected to be
installed in April 2019.
2.2. Foundation - Linda Cundiff
2.2.1. The last installment for STEAM for Teens is in January.
2.2.2. Laptop drawing is January 19, 2019.
2.2.3. Received $3,000 from the Orange Rotary to fund STEAM for Teens programs.
2.2.4. 2019 Documentary Film Series begins with Bright Lights on 1/26/19, Everything is Copy
on 2/23/19, and Sustainable on 3/23/19. These films are sponsored by the Joe
MacPherson Foundation.
2.2.5. New board member David Bustamante.
3. Library Director’s Report
3.1. Updates
3.1.1. Friends will be kicking off their 60th Jubilee in January.
3.1.2. Santa visited all 3 libraries with 75 people attending at El Modena Branch and 130
attending at Taft Branch.
3.1.3. New interface for Local History has launched.
3.1.4. Show Your Library Card & Save is working to add new businesses. Chair Freeman
suggested adding information about this to the library’s email blasts. Trustee vanVoorst
suggested advertising in Orange Plaza Review.
3.1.5. Kurt Keesling’s last day is Friday 12/21/18. Keisha Loidolt will serve as acting manager
until the position is filled.
3.1.6. Holiday closure starts 2pm on Monday 12/24/18. The Library will reopen 1/2/2019.
3.1.7. The graphic/car-wrap has been installed on the C-Max, it looks great!
3.1.8. The Library is getting Kanopy, a movie database, starting 1/2/2019.
3.1.9. The Library’s Instagram account will start in January.
3.1.10. The new mobile app is coming in the next few months.
3.1.11. Literacy staff Brandi Bondurant and Jennifer Hiza swapped positions.
3.1.12. El Modena had their 40th birthday celebration, several dignitaries attended and the event
was well received.
3.2. Financial Report – the Library is right on track.
4. Board Reports
4.1. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison (Martinez)
4.1.1. The Foundation received five more Disneyland tickets to raffle.
4.1.2. The Foundation is getting their website upgraded.

4.2. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison (reported by Freeman)
4.2.1. The Friends are working on getting a proclamation added to the 1/8/19 council agenda.
4.2.2. The Holiday Boutique sale was very successful, made over $1,000.
4.2.3. Friends Board Member Susie Huber reported that the Friends will be raffling gift baskets
each month next year to help raise funds for their 60th Jubilee event.
4.2.4. Fundraiser at Ruby’s January 23, 2019.
4.2.5. Redeemed coupons: 50 Friends, 11 Treats in the Streets, 58 Santa Visit at Libraries.
4.3. Report from Chair Freeman
4.3.1. Chair Freeman attended the 12/8/18 council meeting and introduced himself to new
Councilmember Chip Monaco and invited him to attend the March Library Board
meeting. Chair Freeman is going to send him a letter to confirm.
4.4. Reports from Trustees
4.4.1. Trustee Calvert gave a tour of the Library to her Ukulele group and they really enjoyed it.
Two people signed up for a library card. Forty-seven people attended the Ukelele Soup
program to play Christmas Carols. Trustee Calvert thanked the Director for allowing
them to hold their programs here.
5. Old Business
5.1. Treats in the Streets Recap
5.1.1. The Board enjoyed having the Pop-up Library next to them and discussed working out
logistics for future events, one being that some of the people winning the “free book”
coupon thought they could go to the Pop-up Library and redeem it immediately.
5.1.2. Chair Freeman would like to request an end booth next year.
6. New Business
6.1. Statistics for Board Outreach Events – the Board discussed how many people they think visited
their booth and provided the numbers to Ms. Eriksen. They will decide how to keep count for
future events. The numbers below are estimates.
6.1.1. Third of July – 300 visited
6.1.2. National Night Out – 500 visited
6.1.3. Treats in the Streets – 1,000 visited
6.2. Policy Update: Homework Centers – The Board approved the submitted changes.
