10.15.2018 Library Board of Trustees Minutes - ApprovedORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES Monday, October 15, 2018; 3:30 p.m. 1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:32pm) 1.1. Roll Call Present: Freeman, Martinez, Hitchcock, vanVoorst, Calvert 1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated September 17, 2018 Motion: Martinez Second: vanVoorst Ayes: Freeman, Martinez, Hitchcock, vanVoorst Abstain: Calvert 2. Friend’s President Kathleen Stevens 2.1. Ms. Stevens reported they made $485 in book sales during the Library’s Comic-Con event. 2.2. Their 60th Jubilee is still in the planning stages; the first event takes place January 5, 2019. They plan to raffle themed basket each month to help raise funds for the end of the year Jubilee. 3. Library Director’s Report 3.1. Adult & Branch Services Manager Kurt Keesling is retiring in December. 3.2. Librarian II in background. 3.3. Thank you to Friends and the Board for helping with Comic-Con event. 3.4. New Literacy Assistant Jenn Hiza started. 3.5. The Elk’s Reading Promise was a big success. Trustee Calvert said she was impressed that the City opened the community room on a Sunday for this event. Thirty new library cards were issued. 3.6. All three Orange Public Libraries have AED’s installed. 3.7. Staff Service Awards presented to John Ferry for 10 years, and Deniss Sok for 15 years. 3.8. Orange Plaza has been named “A Great Place in America” by the American Planning Association, joining places such as Olvera Street, Central Park, Golden Gate Bridge, etc. 3.9. There may be an opportunity to build at Grijalva Park. The Library is interested in getting a new library added to this location. There are several groups interested in this site. Director Curtis is working with the Foundation to get a letter to the City to state their interest. 3.10. Financial Report – One-third into the fiscal year and the library is right on track. 4. Board Reports 4.1. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison (Martinez) 4.1.1. Comic-Con event – the sale of popcorn and drinks brought in $300. 4.1.2. Foundation is working with Edison and Rotary to obtain grants for STEAM. 4.1.3. STEAM for Teens & Tweens is going very well. 4.1.4. NanoWriMo – Author visit this Saturday. The program is in February. 4.1.5. It’s Your Estate has started, getting 60+ attendees per meeting, this is an 8-week course. 4.2. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison (Hitchcock) 4.2.1. Amazon sales totaled $800. 4.2.2. Book sales $400. 4.2.3. Holiday Boutique is scheduled for Saturday 12/1/18. 4.2.4. Free Book coupons redeemed 105. 4.3. Report from Chair Freeman 4.4. The Pop-up Library will join Treats in the Streets. 5.1.2. The Board would like pricing to possibly purchase more OPL bags. 6. New Business (none) 7. Public Comment (this item was moved to under Item 2 above) 7.1. Trustee Martinez introduced her guest Dr. Jessica Tunney, principal of TLC Public Charter School. They are a new charter in Orange and would like to collaborate with the Library. Dr. Tunney provided background on her school and programming. 8. Adjournment (4:57pm) The meeting was adjourned until the December 17, 2018 meeting, going dark for 11/19/18.
