MINUTES
Monday, September 17, 2018; 3:30 p.m.
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:30pm)
1.1. Roll Call
Present: Freeman, Martinez, Hitchcock, vanVoorst
Absent: Calvert
1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dates August 20, 2018

2. Foundation Quarterly Report (Linda Cundiff)
2.1. The Library Foundation’s Executive Director Linda Cundiff reported that the new seed library
storage case is ready for El Modena Branch Library and will be taken over tomorrow.
2.2. The Disneyland ticket drawing brought in $1,500.
2.3. The $5k donation from Joanne Coontz’ trust had been given to the Library.
2.4. Street Fair parking brought in $11,638 with 90 volunteers assisting from National Charity
League.
2.5. A special thanks to Rick & Rebecca Martinez for use of their RV each year.
2.6. Library naming opportunities (for areas in the Library) are still available through the Foundation.
2.7. It’s Your Estate is going well. STEAM for Teens starts in October with a Migration of
Butterflies program. Robot In A Day Camp will be held on 10/6 at ElMo.
2.8. Introduction of Dr. Hartl, a new Foundation Boardmember.
3. Library Director’s Report
3.1. Updates
3.1.1. The Library is expecting a large crowd at this weekend’s Comic-con event.
3.1.2. The new part-time literacy assistant starts tomorrow. The program currently has 48 paired
tutors and learners. The Library is already outgrowing its literacy space even with the
addition of the ElMo branch location.
3.1.3. “A Year in Review” flyer listing some of the Library’s services was provided to the
Board for their review and input. Mr. Curtis asked the Board to email any suggested
changes or ideas to him.
3.1.4. There is an opportunity at Grijalva Park to build on empty space. Mr. Curtis would like to
have the city consider a library for that location. There are other groups also interested in
this space.
3.2. Financial Report – The Library is on track, it is early in the fiscal year.
4. Board Reports
4.1. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison (Martinez)
4.1.1. No new items to report (was covered by Ms. Cundiff in Item 2 above).
4.2. Report from Friends of the Library (Freeman)
4.2.1. Amazon sales last month: $1,783. Total profits for this year: $6,121.
4.2.2. Saturday’s Book sale earnings: over $1,000.
4.2.3. Preparing for 60th jubilee with a kick-off in January.
4.2.4. Fundraiser at Woody’s on 10/10/18.
4.2.5. Friends will be participating in Comic-con.
4.2.6. 66 free book coupons redeemed: 48 Friends, 14 new cards, 2 National Night Out, and 2
Concerts in the Park.
4.3. Report from Chair Freeman – none.

4.4. Reports from Trustees
4.4.1. Trustee Hitchcock stated that she and Vice Chair Martinez were trained to work the
comic-con event on Saturday and stated that more volunteers are needed.
4.4.2. Vice Chair Martinez is working with the School District to get textbooks for the Library.
5. Old Business
5.1. Treats in the Streets (Thursday 10/25 4-7pm)
5.1.1. Popup Library will come to Treats in the Streets.
5.1.2. Trustee vanVoorst asked to have the Kiwanis booth placed next to the Library so she can
share her volunteers between the 3 booths.
5.1.3. Vice Chair Martinez will purchase candy. She also suggested putting together goodie
bags with library info inside to hand out. Chair Freeman suggested using some of the
Friends money to purchase bags.
5.2. Back to School Nights
5.2.1. Trustee vanVoorst helped with three Open Houses, the first was at Jordan Elementary
where she didn’t feel it was well attended, and the second was at McPherson, which she
said was very impressive.
