MINUTES
Monday, May 20, 2019; 3:30 p.m.
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance
1.1. Roll Call (3:30pm)
Present: Steve Freeman, Rebecca Martinez, Marva Hitchcock, Peggy Calvert, Patti vanVoorst
Absent: none
1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated April 15, 2019

2. Children’s and Teen Manager – Shannon Lane
2.1. Summer Reading Club
2.1.1. Ms. Lane spoke about the upcoming Summer Reading Club (SRC) program and some
new changes. They will be adding an extra week to the program and are including CHOC
in the program.
2.1.2. Children’s received a Grant from American Library Association titled “Great Stories
Club” which is geared towards at-risk-teens and includes free books and lunch. There
will be three sessions held at the Mariposa Center.
3. Library Director’s Report
3.1. Updates
3.1.1. Instagram is going strong; staff is meeting with OPD’s social media lead to set up a photo
opportunity at the Library.
3.1.2. The Library is collaborating with the Youth Centers of Orange to provide the Lunch at
the Library program that will take place at El Modena Branch – they will be providing
staff to work this program Monday through Thursday for six weeks.
3.1.3. Librarian II & III are in background process.
3.2. Financial Report – Library is right on track.
4. Board Reports
4.1. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison
4.1.1. Chair Freeman attended the meeting and reported that the Foundation will be switching
to a calendar year.
4.1.2. Gala basket donations are going very well.
4.2. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison
4.2.1. Trustee Hitchcock reported that the Friends approved the use of coupons for the Summer
Reading Club.
4.2.2. Friends’ coupons redeemed: 47 (41 Friends, 5 memberships, 1 National Library Week).
4.2.3. The Friends have a new volunteer coordinator, Kathi Shaner.
4.2.4. Next book sale is 6/15/19 in the Children’s courtyard.
4.2.5. Next fundraiser is June 23-27 at Wise Guys Pizzeria.
4.2.6. Internet Sales $513.
4.3. Report from Chair Freeman – none.
4.4. Reports from Trustees – none.

5. Old Business
5.1. Serving with a Purpose (5/23/19 9-4, Ontario)
5.1.1. Details were confirmed for where and when to meet to drive to the conference.
5.2. Library Board’s basket contribution due to Friends by 6/1/19
5.2.1. Vice Chair Martinez brought the basket to give to Friends.
6. New Business
6.1. Show Your Library Card & Save
6.1.1. Packets were distributed with applications and info about the program and how to sell the
program to vendors. The Board was given their own list of vendors to visit. The contest
runs through the end of October 2019.
6.2. Review Goals: Ongoing Actions & Activities for FY19/20
6.2.1. Chair Freeman asked the Board to review the current “Activities” in the Mission
Statement and send any items they wish to consider to Ms. Eriksen.
7. Public Comment
7.1. President of the Orange Community Historical Society Jane Owens attended the meeting to
introduce herself to the Library Board and talk about their organization. She mentioned concern
about scheduling the Library’s Community Room for their OCHS Board meetings. Chair
Freeman explained that this was not a question for the Library Board but for Library
Administration.
