MINUTES
Monday, January 21, 2019; 3:30 p.m.
Orange Public Library – El Modena Branch
1. Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance (3:30pm)
1.1. Roll Call
Present: Steve Freeman, Rebecca Martinez, Marva Hitchcock, Patti vanVoorst, Peggy Calvert
1.2. Approval of Meeting Minutes dated 12/17/2018

2. Friends Jubilee update (Courtney)
2.1. Making gift baskets to raffle off monthly.
2.2. Getting a proclamation at the 2/12 council meeting.
2.3. Would like to establish a scholarship award, working on details.
2.4. The Jubilee is scheduled for Sunday 10/13/19 at the Library.
2.5. Fundraiser at Ruby’s on 1/23/19.
2.6. The Board agreed to providing items for a raffle basket for the month of July (the basket is
needed by 6/1/19).
3. Library Director’s Report
3.1. Updates
3.1.1. Streaming movie database Kanopy is up and running.
3.1.2. Instagram is going well.
3.1.3. Six new study carrels installed upstairs.
3.1.4. Summer Reading Club is getting an extra week, running 6/15-8/3.
3.1.5. Hannah Haase started today, she is a Librarian II.
3.1.6. Keisha Loidolt is the Adult & Branch Services (ABS) acting manager until the position is
filled.
3.1.7. Changes are coming to the upstairs area, beginning with moving the manager’s office
into one of the study rooms with a door that will lead to the ABS staffing area.
3.1.8. El Modena is getting a new projector and sound bar to allow for more programming
opportunities.
3.2. Financial Report – right on track.
4. Board Reports
4.1. Report from Orange Public Library Foundation Liaison (Martinez)
4.1.1. Foundation sent out their newsletter just before Christmas to 700 families, 26 have come
back with donations.
4.1.2. Received a $5,000 grant from Edison for STEAM for Teens/Tweens.
4.1.3. Film Festival starts Saturday 1/26/19 with Bright Lights.
4.1.4. Strategic planning committee for the Gala is working on details, a date has not been set
yet, but will take place between April-June.
4.2. Report from Friends of the Library Liaison (Hitchcock)
4.2.1. Board elections took place, Christine Huard-Spencer is the Vice President, Mary Galuska
is the temporary secretary until the position is filled.
4.2.2. Coupons redeemed: 68 total: 54 Friends, 3 Halloween, 11 business card coupons.
4.2.3. Six new volunteers in training.
4.2.4. December Internet sales: $1,300.
4.3. Report from Chair Freeman
4.3.1. At next month’s council meeting (2/12/19), they will be discussing Grijalva Park.
Freeman, Curtis and Kim Nichols are working on a letter to the Council to state the
Library’s interest in being involved in these discussions.
4.3.2. Chair Freeman will be inviting new councilmember Chip Monaco to the March Board
meeting.
4.4. Reports from Trustees
4.4.1. Trustee Calvert suggested the book “The Library Book” – it’s about the Fire of the City
of Los Angeles Library.

6.1. ALA Membership Renewal (2/28/19-2/29/20)

6.2. Serving with a Purpose Conference (5/23/19 9-4, Ontario)
6.2.1. The Board will attend and will decide logistics at a future meeting.
7. Public Comment
7.1. Foundation Director Linda Cundiff is sponsoring two events at the Elmo Branch: 1) Summer
Film Festival, and 2) Robot in a Day Camp.
8. Tour of El Modena Branch (John Ferry)
8.1. Site Supervisor John Ferry provided some background on the Elmo branch and upcoming
changes, including the Literacy Lab and the Seed Library. Elmo just celebrated 40 years of
service to the community. He gave an informative tour of the Library.
