SR - - RESIGNATION DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEESeptember 30, 2014
Mayor Tita Smith
City of Orange
300 E. Chapman Avenue
Orange CA 92869
Dear Mayor Smith,
I am grateful for the opportunity of having served on the Design Review Committee of
the City since 1999. It has been a learning experience, to be sure, but also one where I
enjoyed the collegiality of the Committee and City staff, and came to know the City
much better — its environment and buildings, its politics, its people.
Now the time has come for me to resign my position. For some time I have been
working with the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, of which I am a long -time
member, to re- envision its mission and its property. In September the church hired the
joint venture architects LP3 +DSE (Leason Pomeroy + Doug Ely) and the church is now
in the process to snake what will likely be substantive changes to the facilities and site.
As chair of the Task Force of the church, I am now severely mitigating my ability to
adequately serve the City. Any project involving Leason Pomeroy or Doug Ely is a
conflict of interest. Any project in Old Town is a conflict, as the church is now a major
developer. It is possible that the church will partner with other property owners or
businesses in the downtown area, and I would thus be in conflict with any other project
in which they were a part in the City.
Also, it has been fifteen years since I began serving — way long enough for one person
to directly influence the design of most building projects in the City.
With regret, then, I am resigning my position. Please express my regrets to other
members of the Council and staff, with whom I have served, to make Orange a better
place to live and work.
O S E P H Sincerely,
W OOLLETT
