Orange Public Library Board of Trustees
May 16, 2022
The Orange Public Library Board of Trustees of the City of Orange, California convened on
May 16, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. in a Regular Meeting in the Rotary Room of the Orange Public
Library & History Center, 407 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange, California.
1. OPENING/CALL TO ORDER
Chair Martinez called the meeting to order at 3:33 p.m.
1.1 PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Chair Martinez led the flag salute.
1.2 ROLL CALL
Present: Huber, Valencia, and Martinez
Absent: Calvert, and Montgomery
2. PUBLIC COMMENTS
None.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Approval of meeting minutes of the Orange Public Library Board of Trustees for
the April 18, 2022 Regular Meeting.
A motion was made by Vice Chair Huber, seconded by Trustee Valencia, to approve
the minutes as presented.
The motion carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Huber, Valencia, and Martinez
Noes: None
Absent: Calvert, and Montgomery
4. FRIENDS OF THE ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT
Kathleen Stevens of the Friends of the Orange Public Library ("Friends") provided an
update, including:
The credit card machine is encouraging more book store sales.
The Women's Club recently donated a number of U.S. history books to the Friends
Bookstore.
The Friends donation box shall be emptied daily to discourage thievery.

Branch Libraries have elected new bookstore directors:
El Modena Library Branch: Courtney
Taft Library Branch: Ellie Jordan
5. ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT
Dave Curtis, Library Services Director, provided an update for the Orange Public
Library Foundation ("Foundation"), including:
A recap of the Foundation's last board meeting.
A reminder that the Foundation's Gala is still set for September 25, 2022.
An announcement of Alisa Driscoll as the Chapman University representative.
6. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
6.1 Updates
Dave Curtis, Library Services Director, provided a report on current events at the
Library, including:
Voting boxes have been delivered. Main and El Modena branches have become
highly secured voting centers until June 8, 2022.
The El Modena branch project to make the restrooms ADA compliant has begun.
Construction should last approximately five weeks.
A recap of the May Parade (May 7, 2022) and an announcement of an upcoming
program: Ukulele SOUP (May 21, 2022).
Exhibits celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Mendez et al. v. Westminster et al
verdict shall be on display at the Main and El Modena branches through June 30,
2022.
State Park parking passes are available for checkout and have been a popular
item.
The Orange Public Library held an appreciation luncheon for all of their volunteers.
Library Services' inventory project is almost complete.
Early literacy stations have arrived and are ready to be installed, care of the
Foundation.
The City's 2022-2023 fiscal year budget will be brought before the City Council for
approval on June 14, 2022.
The library will hold a comic convention program on September 17, 2022 from 11
a.m. -4 p.m. Events will take place in the Main Library and at City Hall.
6.2 Financial Report July 2021 -April 2022
The May 2022 Financial Report was received and filed.
7. BOARD REPORTS
7.1 Reports from Chair
Chair Martinez had the following updates to present:
She has not heard back from the Orange Unified School District's Media Specialist
and will continue to pursue a response.

She proposed hosting book signing events at the Library to feature authors from
Orange.
A discussion organizing the Board's itinerary for the Serving with a Purpose
seminar.
7.2 Reports from Trustees
The Trustees had the following to report:
Vice Chair Huber suggested the Library utilize donations from Jo-Ann Fabrics and
Crafts for the Teen Discovery Kits.
Vice Chair Huber suggested the Library host a lecture series starting with local
authors.
8. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 4:14 p.m.
The next Regular Orange Public Library Board of Trustees meeting will be held on
Monday, June 20, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. in the Rotary Room at the Orange Public Library
History Center.
