A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO
MARTEL THOMPSON OF THE ORANGE FIRE DEPART-
MENT AND COMMENDING HIM FOR MORE THAN SEVEN
YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE.
WHEREAS, Martel Thompson began his career as a
firefighter with the Anaheim Fire Department in 1963; and
WHEREAS, he was promoted through the ranks in that
department to become its Training Officer and, subsequently,
the Assistant Chief in charge of Operations; and
WHEREAS, on July 23, 1984, Martel Thompson was
appointed Fire Chief of the city of orange Fire Department;
and
WHEREAS, during his 28 year career, he has participated
as an instructor of Fire Science for Rancho santiago
community College and for the Fire Academy System through
the California State Fire Marshal's Office, and has served
as an adjunct instructor for Pepperdine University in
personnel management programs; and
WHEREAS, Chief Thompson was instrumental in developing
and implementing the Regional Fire Academy concept adopted
on a statewide basis for fire service training; and
WHEREAS, Chief Thompson has served as President of the
Orange County Fire Chiefs Association and is an active
member of several fire service organizations at the local,
state and national levels; and
WHEREAS, Chief Thompson has been a three time recipient
of the Orange County Fireman's Association OVerachiever
Award in recognition of his many contributions to fire
service training, Rancho Santiago College, and professional
fire service associations; and
WHEREAS, on December 30, 1991, Chief Thompson will end
his active-duty role as Fire Chief by retiring;
and WHEREAS, Chief Thompson's contributions have
been invaluable to the orange Fire Department, the City, and
to the citizens that he served during his outstanding
career.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the city Council
of the city of Orange that Fire Chief Martel Thompson
be recognized and congratulated for his loyal and
dedicated service to the city of Orange and the Fire Service for
these past twenty-
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council, on behalf
of the citizens of Orange, wishes Martel a happy, healthy,
and fulfilling retirement.
