BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MINUTES
December 18 , 1989
I . The regular meeting of the Orange Public Library Board of
Trustees was called to order at 4: 30 p.m. by Chairman Tom
Saenz at the Main Library .
Present: Trustees Courtney , Gorham, McEwan , Saenz and Way .
Also present : Joan Campbell , Head of Technical Services ;
Kerry Stern , Main Library Manager ; Hazel Wang , Branch
Libraries Manager ; Karen Leo , Library Director ; and Dolores
Antram, Secretary .
II . Trustee Gorham moved that the minutes of the November 20
meeting be approved as presented . Seconded by Trustee Way .
Motion carried .
III . Financial Report
The financial report is throu�gh October 31 , 1989 . Overall ,
the library budget is well under expended at this time .
IV . Legislative Update
There was no report .
V. Library Director 's Report
Director Leo corr�nended the public services staff for getting
their orders in on time , and the technical services division
for prompt processing . There are 30 , 000 more volumes - an
increase over this time last year .

A. Library Aut�mation Pr�ject Rep�rt
Additianal funding for Phase ! I of the I 'rbrary �utom�t.i �n
proa�ct is on the City Councif agend� on Tue�day, December
19 . Phase II is the on- line public access catalog .
Appropriati �n� for automati �n will be deleted from
Redevelopment �nd additional fund� from the Lebrary Fu�d
wiil be ��ught as Redevelopment monee� cannot be u�ed fior
eq� ipment .
Trustee McEwan as�e� ifi there was a need for any afi the
Trustees to attend the Co�ncil meeting . Direct�r L�a

Th�r� i� a pubii � hearing on January �3 regardin� the
Ivcation for the new libr�ry facifity. The study by
Ray H� � t , library building cansultant , fior a new Mai �
Library fi�cility will be pre�ented . Th� plan has not
yet been acce�ted and approved by Council .

A. Budg�� Cycle �nd inf�rmation
Director Leo went over the budget page by page explaining
ho� to read the inf�rmation �n the �udget print�ut . This
info�mation �ii ! be a part �f the Baard of Tru�tees packet
in the future .

There were no pubfic present�tivn� .
IX . A��ouncements
A. �riends Activities
Th� Frien�� �re h�ving anoth�r luncheon in F�bruary at a
bank in �rang� . PJ re� i �ned from the Friend� Board and
n�w people are needed . The meetings are h� id monthly.

�e are still waiting for the first hal � �f the �$2 ,080
grant f�r the Main Library Hisp�nic Teen Project . It w�s
apparentiy lost in the mail .
�heila Gannon ha� been chosen tv serve on � lengthy jury
trial . The e�rliest she will return i� July, 199� .
