The regular meeting of the Orange Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order at 4:30 p.m. by Chairman George Gorham at the Taft Branch Library. Present: Trustees Courtney, Gorham, McEwan, Saenz and Way. Also present, Karen A. Leo, Library Director , and Sheila Gannon, Administrative Secretary. II . Trustee McEwan moved that the minutes of the January 16 meeting be approved as presented. Seconded by Trustee Way. Motion carried. III . Financial Report: Director Leo reported that the Library is doing very well on expenditures ta date. As of January 31 , 19$9, the expenditures for the five divisions are as follows: Administration - 50.3% Main Library - 59.6% Cable - 55.4% Taft Branch - 56.5% EI Modena - 57.5% IV. Legislative Update: In response to a corrmunication from Mike Dillon, California State Library Lobbyist, regarding the necessity to inform the legislature about the ongoing need for Public Library Funds each year , Director Leo asked the Trustees to write to members of the Senate Budget and Fiscai Review Subcommittee on Education. V. Library Director 's Report: The Library Director 's Report was discussed. VI . Old Busi�e�s� �. Library Automati�n Prnject Report: Director Leo said some real probl�ms have been encounter�d in having th� dat�base tapes created. She explained that it was necessary to �ontract wit� a�other ve�dor �o hav� th� tapes ���ated and fihey haue not had exp�rien�e in wvrking with pub� ic librarie�, but have warked prim�rily �ith academic { ib�arie�. Th�y have �o reprogram a lot of thing� ta meet aur needs. Thus, it has been di �ficult making final contract arr�ngements. We expect tv go up with the circ�latian �ystem in �ugust at Taft Branch Libraryr th�n two weeks I�ter at EI Modena B�anah , Library. Main will probabiy go up after Labor Day We expect to r�r�gister patrons in May, Jun�, and July. Dir��tvr Leo said one library might be ciQsed to do b�rcoding while the other t�o libr�ries remain op�n ta serve the public. She said the �ardware is �xpect�d to be delivered next wee�. B. C. Con�nit�e� on Library Public Relations Pra�ram: Tru�tee Courtney who i� Chairman of the Cor�mitt�� vn Librar� Public Refa�ia�� r�port�d that th� �on�nittee had it� third rneeting on February 14. He stated that the Friend� have no� be�n �ucce��fui in rep9acin� �or�nitfe� member Mary Msyer, �o that position is still open. He said the Friends have approved an appropriation of �1�0 fior use by the cvrr�nit�ee �o take Council memb�rs for caffee, breakfast or lunch. Main Libr�ry r�lands�aping and cvntinued renovativn; 4. purchase of fand f�r a 15,aao square f�ot Lom�-Santia�o bran�h 6ibrary near th� ��rner Qf thase roa�s; �. ca�peting of E1 Modena Branch Library in 999�/91 ; �. a 7,5Q0 �q�are foot addition to the Tafit Br�nch Libr�ry in 1990/9l ; 7. a downtown neighborhoad branch library in 1993t94, if the Main Library mav�s east. Local Histary A�cess Gra�t ���arterly Report: �i�ec�or Leo stated that the Library is extremeiy pl��sed with Dan Lewi�, the Local Mistory Pr�ject Manager. Sh� sai� �verything is �oing v�ry well , as �videnc�d by the first quarterly r�part. G. CA�TA� Workshop, "Trustee Evaluation �f Library Services: " Trust�e� �orham and Courtney �nd Director Leo r�ported �n the �ALTAC Workshop, "Trustee Eva6ua� ion ofi Library Services, " which they aft�nded. I� wa� sug�ested that a police cadet �tay with the child a� the iibrary until th� parents arri��. lt wa� al�� suggested th�t ifi a policy were impiemented, publicity sho�ld prec�de the implementati�n, Di��ctor Leo was asked to acquir� more informati�n which can b� brought t� �he n�xt meeti�g.
