April 17, 1989
f . The regular meeting of the Orange Public Library Board of Trustees
was called to order at 4 p.m. by Chairman George Gorham in the
Comnunity Room of the EI Modena Branch Library.
Present: Trustees Courtney, Gorham, McEwan, Saenz and Way. Also
present, Karen A. Leo, Library Director and Sheila Gannon,
Administrative Secretary.
II . Trustee Courtney moved that the minutes of the March 20 meeting be
approved as presented. Seconded by Trustee McEwan. Motion
carried.
III . Legislative Update
Director Leo said the FY 88/89 Capital improvement Program review
will go to the Planning Corrxnission at 6 o'clock tonight and then
will be presented to the City Council at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April
26.
IV. Library Director 's Report
The reports for February and March were presented and discussed.
V. Qid Business
A. Library Automation Project Report
Director Leo announced that the automation training has been
postponed until the end of May, at which time Inlex will send
someone to conduct a 3 I /2 day training session. Director l.eo
said pians for reregistration are proceeding and requests will
go out for volunteers to assist in the reregistering of
patrons. She stated that 167 volunteers are needed.
B. Library Facilities Needs Assessment Report
Director Leo reported that a letter of intent went out to three
architects as recorr�nended by Ray Hait. S;-he said they are large
firms. A City of drange citizen aiso asked to be included in
the list. Director Leo stated that in regard to a site for the

new Main Library, it was propo�ed a� a p�ssibiiity that Genter

have offered t� staff the bv�th. Trustee McEwan sai�
Councilw�man Co�ntz s�gge�t�d see�ing PTAs as sponsors for the
"�al� for the Library" to be held the first Saturday in
N�vember . �he �fs� sugge��ed ob�aining precinc� maps far us�
from the City Clerk. Truste� Saen� mav�d th�t the Lib�ary

Trustee McEwan. Motion carried.

Mo�i�n carried.
C. �rthur Y��ng Ma�ag�men� Audit
Dlrector Leo stated that �he has can��rns about some �f th�
recammendatians of th� report. The audit rec�rr�nends a
five-year s�rategic psan fvr development and uses public

Directar LeQ stated �that the damaged ceilin� at Taft Bran�h

building i� not accupied.

the Fri�nd�' annuai mee�ing �i11 be held on Sunday, Aprii 30,
at 2 p.m. in the Comm��ity Room of the M�in Libr�ry and
�nc��ra��d the �r�ste�s to attend.

Vi . E. Trustee Tool Kit for Library Leadership - Chapter 11
Chapter 11 was discussed. Director Lea recortxnended reading the
appendices because there is a lot of good material there. She
suggested breaking the material into three sections.
lt was moved by Trustee Saenz that the meeting adjourn. Seconded by
Trustee Way. Motion carried . The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
