Present: Trustees Courtney, Gorham, McEwan, Saenz Way. Also present, Director Karen A. Leo and Sheila Gannon The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as received. Reports Presented and Discussed: The Library Director's monthly report was reviewed and discussed, and the increase in reference questions was again noted this month. Karen Leo reported that the recruitment for a manager for the Main Library ends on July 24, and interviews of applicants will take place on August 14. The panel will consist of two library directors and Library Trustee Martha McEwan. Director Leo stated that S.B. 2493 did not pass because of the Republican caucus in the Assembly. She read a letter written by Friends of the Library President Nora Jacob to Assemblyman Lewis, in which she expressed her disap- pointment in the defeat of S.B. 2493 and requesting his support for future bills which would benefit libraries. Trustee Saenz suggested that, in the future, support might be enlisted from other legislators, but it was the view of the Board that legislators usually take under consideration only the input of their own constituency. Karen Leo said S.B. 1984, the bill asking for $100,000 to fund a consultant position for the State Library, is now waiting for the governor's signature. Karen asked the board members to take action in writing to the governor's office prior to August 5 requesting his support of this bill. Trustee McEwan will attend the 4 p.m. session of the July 22 Council meeting to request the Council to support the Library Bill of Rights. Director Leo reported that we have received the Consortium RFP (request for proposal) . She mentioned that due to the fact that the other members of the consortium must move quickly, we will need to accelerate our position also. Karen also noted that Joan Campbell, Head of Technical Services, went to PACNET in Claremont to consider options for our retrospective conversion, which we will be instituting in the fall. ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES _ July 21, 1986 Page two Karen Leo said the Summer Reading Program is going exceedingly well and that approximately 1250 children have registered at all three libraries. This is . the first year that the libraries have combined their ideas, and it is proving to be very successful. It was mentioned that quite a number of volunteers are working on the program, and TrusteesMcEwan suggested contact- ing the Key Clubs at the local high schools for volunteer help in the future. This suggestion was favorably received. Karen reported on the City Manager's evaluation of department heads. The department heads state their goals for the Kear and at the end of the year the City Manager evaluates the outcome of the goals. She presented the four goals she had established for fsca-1 ya-r- 1986/87. Announcements: Director Leo said she was happy to report that the Audiovisual Department has again been winning awards for their video productions. From over 1200 applications received by the National Federation of Local Programmers, they were one of three to win for their entry entitled "The Best Deal in Town." Also, they won first place at the Orange County Fair in the educational and instructional category for "The Best Deal in Town" and first place in the entertainment category for "Clown College." A sign to read, EL MODENA BRANCH LIBRARY - ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY will be installed at the El Modena Branch on July 30. This will make the library building easily identifiable. Refurbishing of the Edwards House garage is taking place. Karen Leo said that the roof has been redone and ventilators have been installed. The door will be reframed and electricity put in for lighting. Also, dry wall will be installed on the walls. Relandscaping of the Edwards House grounds will take place, and a table will be purchased for staff use in the backyard. In answer to the question of the status of the Taft Branch parking lot, Karen said additional parking will be completed by November. A picture of the current Board of Trustees was presented to Karen Leo by Trustee Courtney as a commemorative of her first year as Director of Orange public Library. Trustee Courtney brought to the attention of the Board a book written by Pasadena author Harriet Doerr entitled Stones for Ibarra and suggested asking the Friends of the Library if they would consider inviting her to be a speaker " at one of their meetings. Trustee Gorham said he would present the idea to the Board of the Friends of the Libary.
