T4INUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING
October 20, 1986
The regular meeting of the Orange Public Library Board of Trustees was
called to order at 4:30 p.m. by Trustee Way at El Modena Branch Library.
Present: Trustees Courtney, Gorham, Saenz, Way. Also present,
Director Karen A. Leo; Bob Felthaus, Head of Reference;
and Sheila Gannon
Absent: Trustee McEwan
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as received.
Reports Presented and Discussed:
The Library Director's monthly report was reviewed and disc.ussed.
Karen Leo reported that letters of recognition from the Library Board have
been sent to staff inembers for their participation in the Summe.r Reading
Program. Letters of recognition to teen volunteers will be sent out in a
� couple of days.
Director Leo announced that two new employees have .been hired at El Modena
Branch: Fred Mercado, Typist Clerk II, full time; Vinh Trinh, Student
Library Page, 19 hours. Karen also noted that they are the first male
employees to be hired at El Modena Sranch. Karen also announced that Pat
Fowler, Secretary, will transfer to Public Works on November 3. She is on
medical leave from the library until that time. Karen stated that the new
Head of Main Library, Margaret Donnellan, will be starting on October 2i.
Trustee Way commended Trustees Saenz and McEwan for their work on the
invitation to the reception for Orange Unified School District and City
officials. Tom Saenz said he was sorry there was not a better turnout
and explained that the school district holds meetings on Wednesdays.
The Board agreed that the presentation by Lori Morgan of Orange Unified
School District was very effective. It was noted that there will be one
more meeting with reading specialists from the elementary schools in
December,

Karen said a meeting will take glace with two Cit� people tn �.iscuss the
letter received from Anaheim Public Library in r�egard to joini�ng �heir
consortium. Kar�n state�. that she would ,1ike to req�uesfi in.�'armation from
an outside vendor for �he purpose of c�mparison. She said t'he on�y other
library in. the caunty which is not aut�mated is Newport Beach, and �hey "
are anticipating automa�tion in: the near future. A discussic�n ensued, and
it was noted that t�e software cc�s�.s, o�,ly, are an the Anaheim presentation.

Bob Felthaus reported on the Reference Workshop which he atten�ed. The
workshap stressed how tt� make patrons comfortabl.e with the Reference
ilepartment and gave training for reference librarians in being more
sensitive �Co the patrons' needs. Bob found the worksht�p very worthwhile
and has been sharing the knowledge he received by conducting workshops
�or reference la.brarians at Orange Public Librarya Fo.11owing completion
of their traininga Bob �ntends to continue by making the wrarkshops
available t�o al1 employees who have contact with the public,
Information flyers in Spa�.ish regarding Hispanic library services are
available at El Modena Branch. Barbara Brotherton is trying to get
Hispanic residents interested �.n helping with sugges�ions for activities.

Announcemen�Cs:
Director Leo announced that Rosemarie Williams will be worka..ng out of
the Main Library in doing art .work for all three li�braries. She is very
�alented in this respect, an�. we are very fortunate to be able to utilize
her talents.
Karen lnade the following announcement�s in regard to building improvements:
l, Relamping, which is done every two years, will be starting soon.
�2. Bids for fihe Taft Branch parking lot expan�ion are opening today,
and it i� hoped that work will be finished in Jan,uary.
3. Shelving in the children's area at El Modena �3ranch will be
rearranged. At �Ghe present �ime, the sh.elves cannot be seen from
the desk. The move will give employees more visual con�rol.
The Friends of the Library are presenting a travel slide show entitled
"Discovering England on Your Own" in the Community Room of the Main
La.brary on October 22. It was announced that the Friends will be having a

book sale at Taft t3ranch on Satuzday, October 25� '�rustee Go�ham reported
that the irisi�.e of the Edwarcls T�ouse garage has now had �wo co�.�Cs of paint

the planned book sale in November� Two book sales per year will be held at
each library� They slior��d �e able to utilize books which �ome in and� thusa
keep storage shelves from be3.ng overcrowded.
Cross training is part o£ Karen Leo's specific objective fo� this year's
budget. The professional staff will ro�.ate between the �hree librari.es.
Prof�ssional and paraprotessional staff will spend three c�.ays a� each of
th.e other two libraries.
Karen announced tha�. she will be attending a Santiago Library System
retreat on October 23rd and 24th,
Karen said much interest has been exhibited in the CLA Convention being
held in� Long Beach this year. Board members, Fri.ends members and staff
are all planning to attend many of the sessions« Karen plans to be there
every day.
