Present: Trustees Gorham, McEwan, Way. Also present, Karen Leo, Library Director and Hazel Wang, Branch Manager. Absent: Trustees Courtney, Saenz The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as received. ileports Presented and lliscussed: The Library Director's monthly report was reviewed, discussed and accepted. Director Leo explained tne Captial Improvement Plan. A new Niain Library would cost �11,600,000 to be completed in the year 1991 and the renovation of the Main Li;brary and the Edwarns rouse would cost Y407,200. An addition to the Taft Branch and expanding the park.ing lot at Caft were among the requests. Karen. further explained the budget review with the City Manager would be on April 7th. She asked Board members to plan to attend the City Council public hearing on the City budget on June 17 to show support for our needs. There was no report from the Finance Director. Karen reported on a meeting with Wanda Weldon regardin� a collection agency for overdues and fines. Trustee Way felt it might hinder public relations with the patrons, A brief discussion ensued and the Library Director was instructed to provide ample notice to the public that delinquent accounts will be sent to a collection agency and that costs to the delinquent patron will ensue. Moved by Trustee Gorham, seconded by Trustee Way to approve the use of a collection agency provided it was agreeable with the City Manager. Motion carried. �aren reported on her meeting with Trustee Saenz, Nlarilyn Buchtel and Shelley Freedman, which arose out of a district-wide committee �tucying the concerns of minorities within the City. The report indicated thattiispanicstirithin the community were unhappy with their lo.cal library.._ On the other hand, the Vietnamese were pleased with al1 facets of �11�' �:�`,the library. A need., t9 work �aitk� the schools is indicated inan effort to reach ttie Hispanic _ ��F Community, possibly by holding parents' meetings in the library and presenting programs to educate about its use. OKANGE PU�LIC LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Tanuary 20, 1986 ANNOUNCEMENTS: The CALTAC Workshop will be on Saturday, January 25, 1986. Trustees McEwan and Way will attend with Director Leo. Karen announced that Karen Klan, Circulation Supervisor had been selected as the City Employee of the Month for January. City Council will make their presentation to her on Tuesday, January 28, 1986. Al1 were invited to attend at 7:OQ p.m. Director Leo thanked the Board for the letters to the Governor supporting legislation to provide more funds for the Public Library Fund and the California Litera�:y Project. The Governor responded affirmatively. She informed Board members that another bill, SB 1220, was going to the Ways and Means Committee and needed support. Each member should call Assemblyman Lewis in Orange and offer support of the bill, Director Leo informed the Board that Pacific Bell had also complied with the library's request for free distribution of out-of-state phone directories. � program on "Eating Disorders" will be presented on Thursday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Library Community Room. Also, the Literacy Volunteers of America--Orange Chapter, will honor Helen Smith in April on her 75th birthday. Helen has been involved iith the LVA from its start here in Orange. Interviews for citizens interested in serving on the Friends of the Library Board will be conducted on January 23rd and 24th. Trustee Gorham reported on the auditing of the books for the Friends, "Everything balances to the penny." The meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 24, 1986 at the Main Library.
